Free Falling​

No hesitation. No doubt. I chant “Force is with me and I…” and I jump!

Head down. Arms by my side. My black leathers ruffle with energy. The wind rushes over my face. Ears roar with the air. My eyes wide with moisture being ripped out of them by the wind. My mouth is wide and filling with air. I yell “Yaaaaaahhhh!”.

Below are Speeders flying along on their humdrum daily journeys through the mega-city with no hint of who is rapidly roaring towards them, the sunshine glistening off their paintwork on this gorgeous blue sky day.

I tilt my head, move a hand, angle a foot, and my body moves a little to the side and I whoosh down past the very surprised passengers. I am so fast they perhaps aren’t even sure what it was they saw. I laugh hysterically, unable to keep my emotions inside. It all pours out.

I dive down past more speeders, a huge freighter, a flock of birds. Bend around a high walkway suspended between skyscrapers. A quick wave at the pedestrians. “Hey guys!” Skillfully avoiding them all. I have no idea how to do this. But I have Faith. I have given myself fully to the Energy of the Universe and in return The Force directs me. Protects me. Points me forward, ever downward. So fast that a blaster bolt wouldn’t catch me now. Ever faster, faster, I fall. “Go! Goooooooo! Ha ha haah!”

Another dot is off to the side in the corner of my eye. Another is Falling! The dot grows larger. Another in black leathers, drifting closer. And just like that, a matter of moments, she is beside me. Cheeks flapping as they fill with air. Eyes as wide in excitement as mine. It is obvious she is laughing hysterically, like someone who has been told the stupidest joke ever and just can’t stop. All I can hear is the wind, but her face is insanely joyful. She spins. A rapid corkscrew. And then with a lean of her body she starts twirling around me. Her long red hair is like fire. Gorgeous amazing orange flames streaking behind her.

Somehow I manage to twirl around her too, somehow. The Force leads me on. Two bodies swirling around each other. Eyes meet eyes. We are inverted dancing. Spontaneously without thought, I yell “I LOVE YOU!” In this matter of moments I have found the one I would live forever with.

This gets a response of another bout of hysterical laughing, as if she has heard the stupidest joke ever. We split apart for a moment as we zoom down around a bright yellow school bus, and then she floats in towards me again and reaches out. She grabs me! Our precise diving postures crumble as I grab onto her and we tumble in chaos. We wrap our arms, our legs, around each other. We crash through a tuft of a cloud. Steam from some skyscraper exhaust. The droplets of water surround us like stars, as we hold each other tight in a ball that plummets ever downwards.

Her face up against mine, wet with the steam . I kiss her. “I love you I love you.” I yell and kiss her more and more.

“I love you too, you fool.” she yells back through the wind and kisses me back. My heart thumps wildly. And with that she lets go and pushes with her feet against my chest and becomes a diving arrow again. With her hair blazing fire behind her, she zips down far below me.

You can’t get away from me that easily! “I love you!” and I straighten out and point myself downwards again to pursue her.

And down we fall.

This was such a unique idea for a fanfic! (I seem to be saying this a lot when I review your stories.) At first I thought that the narrator was Anakin; that quickly proved to not be the case, although I'm certain that the scene where he jumps off the speeder in AotC was on your mind when you came up with this story concept – and the sense of exhilaration that pervades the story is very much the reaction I would expect from him too! I think that another aspect that made me think of Anakin is how un-Jedi this whole thing is for a Force user; granted, there's the absolute trust in the Force, but this is also the story of two individuals who seek adventure and excitement, and as we know "a Jedi seeks not these things" – and once the two characters fall in love, so to speak, they stop being in this Force-controlled fall and "tumble into chaos". At the same time, you took all these elements that would be portents of doom in the SW universe and turned them into something so extremely joyful, the ultimate act of letting go, and things could really go either way if you ever decided to revisit these characters.

(And yes, I guessed the where, it's Coruscant )

This was another quick write. An hour or so to get it down, then fiddling for another hour. With more thought I could have added more graduation to it. Maybe started the jump higher, closer to orbit, with him passing by landing spacecraft. Maybe built up the inner excitement of the character, rather than going directly to 100%.

The Love bit... I don't like the line "I have found the one I would live forever with." That doesn't work with the mood. It should have stayed more visceral, immediate. And I know, I know, Jedi in love is a tricky thing, but I wanted it so there we are. In a regular story this would have been ramping up to Love rather too quickly, but hey, he's only got a few seconds to work with here, and I only had an hour to figure it out.

The tumbling ball. I wish I had a soundtrack for the story. That's where the orchestra changes the scores pace and has a fun chaotic time of it.

And yeah, that image of Anakin jumping out of the speeder was the source. Such a ridiculous moment in a wonderfully ridiculous movie. It also reminded me that physics and gravity and momentum are pretty optional in the Star Wars Universe.

Landing... well, that can happen however you want it. Land into an ocean, or they have antigrav, or little jetpacks, or parachutes, or they grab onto the sides of a building or a speeder. Or a Jedi Master on the ground raises his hands dramatically and slows them down with The Force. Or they reach out with their hands and use Force to slow themselves down.
Anything.

 

I definitely recognized the inspiration, though oddly enough at a couple points I also had an odd image of Ahsoka running through the Skylanes of Coruscant in TCW, and somewhere along the way the pictures merged into a nameless faceless Jedi

The romantic overtures by the end were well done. Coruscant really is one of those stunning sights that can stir all kinds of odd emotions.
