Actually, the French Military really isn't that bad. It's alot better than some nations out there anyway.

They did an admirable job getting their country back in WWII, I suppose. And they're real good at sinking their own ships, which is what they had to do when the Italians and Germans were closing in on them (it prevented the Axis powers from capturing them).

 

They did have the Maginot line to defend them, which would have stopped the German army but they were more clever, they went through belgian territory, bypassed the line and captured the rest of France.

 

The Maginot Line was based upon the outdated "World War I style" of warfare, and the design didn't anticipate the German emphasis on armor and air power. Even if the Germans didn't bypass the line, they still could have broken through with more ease than was intended by the French. Plus, it's kinda stupid to assume the Germans would just directly cross the border into France, especially since they had gone through Belgium during the First World War.

 

That was WW1, with the Schlieffen Plan. Not the most cunning bit of planning really.

Generals: Bah, we cannot invade France, they have the Maginot Line along our border!
Schlieffen: So go across the Belgian border, tick off the British, and get yourselves into a war with half of Europe and possibly the US instead of just hammering the line and taking on France itself.
