    Title: Friendship Is Galactic
Genre: um...it's based on a cartoon about magical ponies
Characters: the cast of MLP, various canon characters
    Timeframe: saga
Synopsis: Twilight Sparkle finds another magic mirror in the castle's library. This time it transports her to the GFFA and transforms her into an entirely new form. While seeking her way back to Equestria, she meets some aliens who seem rather familiar.

This story is dedicated to my Youngling, without whom I would know nothing of the awesomeness of ponies, and who came up with the title "Friendship Is Galactic."

    ----------------------------------------------
Twilight Sparkle was in a tizzy.

The famous Pegasi meteor shower was that night, and she and her friends had promised to help Princess Celestia set up the palace's courtyard for the annual viewing party. Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy hung streamers and garlands while Pinkie Pie blew up balloons. Rarity decorated the topiaries with twinkle lights, and Applejack set up the tables and chairs. In the center of the courtyard, Twilight had nearly finished fine tuning her telescope so the guests could better view the shooting stars. Everything had been coming along perfectly.

And then Spike, who was bringing another box of twinkle lights for Rarity, tripped on a stray pebble. He lost his balance, and the box went flying. "I'll get it!" Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and Applejack called at the same time. They shot forward, collided with each other and Spike, and sent the dragon careening towards a sundial topped with a small statue of Star Swirl the Bearded. Spike crashed into the sundial with such force that Star Swirl went flying.

Twilight saw it coming as if in slow motion and dove to intercept it, but the statuette flew between her outstretched hooves. It struck the telescope, knocking it off its tripod. It fell to the paving stones with a tinkling crash that reduced the delicate lenses to a million tiny slivers. The wizard's statue hit the brick border of a bed of rhododendrons, severing his head which rolled to land next to where Twilight knelt in disbelief. She scooped up the unicorn head in on hoof and the telescope's battered body in the other and looked between them frantically. "No!" she cried, as her friends gathered around her. "No, no, nooooo! What am I going to do? If we don't have a telescope, Princess Celestia will have to cancel the party, and everyone will be so disappointed, and they'll..."

"Um, hello, alicorn princess?" Rainbow Dash interrupted, rolling her eyes. "Can't you just-- oh, I don't know-- use your magic to fix the thing?"

"Yes, darling," Rarity agreed. "Surely there's some sort of mending spell that put it right."

"Mending spell? The lenses are a pile of dust!" Twilight said, beginning to hyperventilate. "There's no mending spell in existence that can put them all back together!"

Applejack patted the frantic alicorn on her back. "Now, now. Calm down, sugar cube. It ain't worth gettin' all worked up over a piece of glass."

"Glass?" Twilight looked up with a hopeful gleam in her violet eyes. "That's it! We can use Star Swirl the Bearded's legendary Star Glass! It's supposed to be here at the castle!"

The rest of the ponies exchanged glances. Twilight knew every detail about the famous wizard, but she tended to forget that the rest of the world didn't share her obsession. "And what in hay is a Star Glass?" Applejack asked.

"Well, it must be some kind of magical telescope," Twilight answered impatiently, as if her friend ought to have known. "According to the stories, it let Star Swirl see the stars as if he flew among them! It would be perfect for Celestia's party. I've got to get to the library!" Twilight rose eagerly, excited as always at the prospect of research. "Are you guys coming?"

"Um, yeah. I'm gonna stay here and...clean up," Rainbow Dash said picking up a strand of the scattered twinkle lights. The others quickly murmured their agreement.

"Oh." Twilight's ears drooped in disappointment. "Well, that's probably a good idea. Come on, Spike."

"I think I'll stay, too," the dragon said, scooping up an armful of lights. "This is a pretty big mess." Like the ponies, Spike was less than enthusiastic at the prospect of spending hours in the dark reaches the castle library.

Twilight gave him a stern look. "Spike."

He sighed and put down the twinkle lights. "Coming."
    ------------------------------------

"I can't believe it!" Twilight enthused as she pranced between rows of thick, dusty tomes. "The librarian said the Star Glass really is here, and she even knew where it is! We're so lucky!"

Trailing behind her, Spike echoed, "Yeah, lucky." The atmosphere grew progressively thicker and gloomier the further they went into the archives, and he was beginning to feel a little creeped out.

A curious spider lowered itself on a thread to get a better look at these strange visitors. It waved several legs cheerfully at Spike, who failed to return the friendly gesture. Instead, he yelped and scrambled forward, crashing into Twilight's flank when she stopped at the end of the aisle. She hardly seemed to notice; she was so absorbed in examining the bin of ancient scrolls and a strange device made of balls of various colors and sizes on a wire frame that stood in front of the canvas draped wall.

"This is where the librarian said the Star Glass would be," Twilight said frowning. "Here are Star Swirl's astronomy scrolls, and here's his orrery, but I don't see anything that looks like a telescope.....Spike!"

The dragon had found a small crank on the strange device and was turning it so that the colored balls rotated. "Look, all these little balls go around the big yellow one. Whee!" Spike turned the crank faster so that the colored spheres spun merrily.

"That's because it's Star Swirl's orrery. His theoretical model of the solar system," she added at Spike's blank stare. Her voice took on a pedantic tone as she continued, "Star Swirl was the first to propose that the planets orbit the sun, which of course we know today is.... Would you please stop that! That orrery is a priceless artifact, not a toy!"

"Aww..." Spike gave the crank one last spin, and as the spheres finished their rotation, the smallest planet snagged the canvas drape and pulled it askew. "Look! There's something back there," Spike exclaimed, spotting a metallic gleam. He darted forward and started tugging down the canvas. Twilight stepped in gingerly and eased down her side of the drape, trying to keep the heavy canvas off of the fragile scrolls. She gasped when she saw what it had been hiding.

Hanging on the wall was a circular mirror large enough to show her from her hooves to the tip of her horn, with room to spare. It had a wide frame of dull, brushed silver with two strange markings on it, one at the 9 o'clock position and one at 3 o'clock. The left-hand symbol was done in red enamel. It looked like a crescent tipped on its side with an odd, three-pronged spike in between the crescent's horns. The one on the right was a blue circle with a series of dashes around its circumference; in the center was what looked like a child's drawing of the sun-- a circle with straight lines projecting from it.

"Oh no," Spike said, backing slowly away. "I'm not messing with any more magic mirrors! Last time, I got turned into a dog."

Twilight wasn't listening. "I don't understand," she said. "How can a mirror help you see the stars better? And what are these symbols? I've never seen anything like them before. She stepped closer to the mirror, illuminating them with the magic glow from her horn so she could examine them in the archive's gloom. "What is this? A star? Some sort of bird? Maybe it's a phoenix." Twilight peered so closely at the red symbol that the tip of her horn brushed it. "And this one," she said, moving to the other side. "Is it supposed to be a wheel? Do these look like spokes to you?" She tapped the circle with her glowing horn.

Suddenly there was a snap and a hiss and the mirror began to glow with in incandescent blue light. Startled, Twilight stepped backwards, but it was too late. She found herself caught by a mysterious force, like a horseshoe nail to a magnet. She scrabbled backwards, but her hooves could find no purchase on the stone floor. Slowly, inexorably the beam of energy pulled her forwards. "Spiiiiiike!" Twilight wailed.

Transfixed in horror, Spike could only watch as his friend was drawn towards and then into the mirror. When her tail finally vanished, the blue glow disappeared with another snap-hiss. The spell broken, Spike blinked. "Not again."

    Chapter 2: Strange Reflections

Traveling through multidimensional portals was apparently something you never got used to. Twilight felt sick as she was pulled through the darkness, twisted and stretched like a batch of Pinkie Pie's super-duper-sticky taffy. She travelled a vast distance across the void-- or maybe no distance at all, she couldn't tell. Time, space and reality seemed to have no meaning in there. Just as Twilight was beginning to wonder if there was anything on the other end of the portal or if she was going to be trapped in pitch-black limbo forever, tracks of white light streaked past her. Suddenly, reality slammed back into force. The white streaks contracted down to pinpricks of stars, but before Twilight had a chance to admire the brilliant starscape that surrounded her, she shot forward and was unceremoniously dumped onto a marble floor.

Bruised and disoriented, Twilight lay in heap. She closed her eyes and breathed deeply, trying to make this dimension stop swimming around her. Slowly, her equilibrium returned and she pushed herself up with her.....

    Hands.

She had hands. She was human.

Ok, Twilight, don't panic, she told herself. This is nothing you can't handle. She'd been, human before, twice in fact, and though it had taken some time to get used to balancing on two legs and using those fiddly appendages called fingers, it hadn't been too bad. The biggest problem with being human was that she didn't have her magic, but she'd coped with that difficulty before; she could do it again. Feeling a little more confident, Twilight rose to her knees.

Something flopped heavily over her right shoulder. Twilight jerked, trying to buck with legs that bent the wrong way, and what looked like a thick purple snake swung into view and smacked against her. Twilight shrieked and grabbed at it with both hands. She yanked it and flung it away as hard as she could. And shrieked again, this time in pain, because the snake was attached to her head. "Ack! Get it off! Get it off!" Twilight whimpered. She staggered to her feet, shaking her head and pawing frantically at the snake, but fell on her butt with a graceless thump when another serpent fell over her left shoulder and she realized she could feel herself hitting the first.

A circular mirror, almost twin to the one in Canterlot's library, hung above where Twilight sat spraddled on the floor. Slowly rising to her two unsteady feet, she gaped at the strange form she saw reflected there.

Like the human girl she'd been transformed into when another magic mirror sent her to Canterlot High, this form just had two legs, the others replaced by arms and hands. As when she'd been human, Twilight was completely clothed; this time in a roughly woven sky-blue tunic, dark purple pants, and knee-high boots. But the resemblance to human Twilight ended there. Instead of a mane-- hair, she corrected herself, humans called it hair-- two fleshy tentacles grew from the top of her head and dangled down past her shoulders nearly to her waist. Each one was as thick around as her forearm at its base, tapering to a blunt tip. On these tentacles, Twilight's lavender skin was patterned with six-pointed magenta stars-- a design reminiscent of her cutie mark. A gold headpiece with a gem cut in the same star shape encircled her brow. "What am I?" Twilight breathed, staring at her reflection. "Where am I?" Because in all the time she'd been at Canterlot High, she'd never seen or heard of anyone who looked like....well, like her.

Twilight looked around the chamber slowly, trying to take stock of her surroundings. She was standing on raised, semi-circular dais in front of the portal mirror. To her left was a table of ornately carved dark wood and plushly cushioned stool. Despite the presence of the enormous mirror above the dais, the table was also topped with a three-paneled mirror that let Twilight see her strange new face from various angles. The table was littered with tiny bottles and jars, some filled with perfume, some with cosmetics. It reminded Twilight of Rarity's dressing table back in Ponyville. Next to the table were shelves of wigs and headpieces on silver stands. Many of them were decorated with sparkling gems or golden charms, but they were so tall and unwieldy looking that Twilight doubted they'd be very comfortable. On the opposite wall, a heavy maroon velvet curtain partially hid a rack of gorgeous dresses. Twilight frowned; had she been transported to this world's version of the Carousel Boutique? If so, what was a magic mirror doing here?

She stepped up on the dais again to take a better look at the mirror. It had the same heavy silver frame as the Star Glass. Like Star Swirl's mirror, there were two symbols on the mirror, one on each side, but Twilight recognized these symbols immediately-- a sun and a moon, Celestia and Luna's cutie marks. Hope surged in Twilight; these were symbols of Equestria. She'd activated the Star Glass's portal when she'd touched those arcane symbols on it. Perhaps all she had to do return home was touch the sun and moon! She reached out and touched first the sun, then the moon, and....nothing happened. She tried it again. Backwards. Both at the same time. Nothing.

"Gaaaah!" Twilight cried, and smacked her head against the glass in frustration. And then she remembered, she hadn't used her hooves to touch those symbols; she'd used her horn. Her magic. Humans didn't have magic, but perhaps this form, whatever it was, did. Twilight screwed her face up in concentration and desperately reached out for her magic.

She was so intent that she didn't hear the door behind her slide open, nor did she realize she wasn't alone until a familiar voice said, "I beg your pardon, but who are you, and what are you doing in the Queen's dressing room?"

:D Haven't seen the new cartoon (umm, I think I used to watch the old cartoon movies back in the age of the dinosaurs:p). But this looks like a lot of fun! And it's neat that you worked the Twi'lek character design from your existing pic in here -- Twilight's confusion over the headtails was cute. :) Now I just wonder when and where in the GFFA she has ended up. Whoa! This is IMMENSE and I'll be waiting for the next instalment as eagerly as the Baiard youngling. I haven't watched MLP since... well, if it was the age of dinosaurs for Kahara then for me it's probably around the time of the Big Bang, but never mind that -- I think I get the general idea nonetheless :D And my guess is that she's on Naboo (IIRC there was a Naboo handmaiden character in your fanart thread?) I hope the word race worked its magic on this story and that we get to read more soon!

This is great! You've captured the voice of each pony really well. I love the little details that make me feel like I'm really watching the show, like the friendly library spider and the reference to Pinkie Pie's super-duper-sticky taffy. I also like Twilight's reaction to her new headtails. :)

The illustration is excellent but a bit small to really appreciate the details, is there anyway you could make it a little bigger?

Tarsier, if you click on the picture, it should take you to the full sized image on Imageshack.

I'm glad think the ponies sound like themselves; I could practically hear them talking as I was writing :)

Can I make a request for footnotes regarding the terms they use while in their own universe? I read a lot about the cartoon, watched some dubbed episodes with five children sitting on and behind me; but catching up with 100 episodes will take me a while in terms of figuring out every single detail. I want to make sure I understand everything! :)

As per Ewok Poet's request, here's a brief glossary of some of the in Pony-verse terms. If I've forgotten anything, let me know or check out the Friendship Is Magic wiki

The Mane Six: (with brief description and their defining trait)
Twilight Sparkle: lavender alicorn princess; magic
    Rarity: fashionable white unicorn; generosity
Applejack: light orange farmer pony; honesty
Rainbow Dash: athletic light blue pegasus with a rainbow mane; loyalty
Fluttershy: animal loving yellow pegasus; kindness
Pinkie Pie: pink party planning pony; laughter
Spike: baby dragon who lives with Twilight

The quick and dirty synopsis of Equestria Girls: Twilight Sparkle goes through a magical mirror to the human world (albeit one populated by people with pastel skin and technicolor hair). She is transformed into a teenaged girl and meets the human counterparts of everyone she knows from Equestria at Canterlot High School, including her best friends who help her return to her own world.

Equestria: the pony kingdom ruled by Princess Celestia
Alicorn: a winged unicorn. All alicorns are princesses (or, presumably, princes)
Cutie mark: the symbol each pony has on their flank, it represents what makes them unique.
Princess Celestia: white alicorn with a rainbow colored mane. She rules Equestria, and is in charge of raising the sun every day. Her cutie mark is a sun.
Princess Luna: Celestia's sister, a black alicorn with a dark blue mane. In charge of the moon. Her cutie mark is a moon.
Star Swirl the Bearded: legendary unicorn magician. Think Merlin as a pony.
Canterlot: capital of Equestria, where Celestia's castle is.
Carousel Boutique: shop run by the very fashionable unicorn, Rarity.
Ponyville: town where Twilight and her friends live

Thank you again :) I've watched a lot of cartoons (even before the Youngling was around), and it's fun to work in the cartoon-like details. I've also read several of the MLP children's books with the Youngling, and they've helped me see how to write dialogue for the Mane Six.

I actually only started watching the current version of MLP, so I know who Megan is, but that's all. When the original version of MLP came out, I was more into Care Bears. [face_blush]

    I would love that! :D

Thanks for the term glossary. Now I am almost ashamed to say that I knew all of these (but they will definitely be helpful for those who don't) and that I should have explained myself better - I was curious about the anual Pegasi meteor shower, the mentioned character of Star Swirl the Bearded and his Star Glass telescope. If I understood this well, he is canon and the rest is your creation?!

I was told that I need to get into the actual show because the lead character is a cool nerd who would do anything for her friends, and who does magic. And though I understand that this is *your* interpretation of Twilight Sparkle and that I may need to take it with a tiny wee grain of salt, I am definitely liking her. Magic girls are as cool as magic boys, with one difference - I don't get crushes on them. :p

Other than that, I had three toys from the original series as a kid, but I was never into extreme cutesy, including the Care Bears. From what I understand and from the little I have seen of the cartoon and activity books when I was buying a Rainbow Dash doll on rollerskates for my youngest niece; this cartoon makes supercute look cool and adds a lot of depth to the characters.

    Chapter 1

And then, the story begins with an astrophysics-related anomaly. I based a 60K word fic on that, so...sign me up. Now I am interested to know how the ponies grasp astronomy. :)

The scene where everybody has useless advice on how to fix the broken telescope is funny. And Twilight Sparkle's fear is reasonable - she is a student, after all. Glad Applejack is being cool and helpful. The only thing I didn't get here is if the statue broke, too.

Niiice. As said, I am a sucker for this type of stuff. And he is basically Equestria's Copernicus. It will only be fair if he appears as a Force ghost in the GFFA.

And don't all these ponies know the meaning of a hidden artefact they should not touch? Hehe.

On top of it all, the ending is an interesting spin on Through the Looking Glass. Neat. :)

    Chapter 2

Aaand, ladies and gentlemen, here you have it - Twi'lek Sparkle. :p I loved Twilight's confusion as she was trying to walk on "just" two legs, remembering from her previous adventure that her mane was now her and then, to her horror, discovering she had lekku.

Also, since she is one smart cookie, love the hint that she will need to use SOMETHING...since we know what that something is and we love it. The only thing I am afraid of is that the sight of millions of star systems will overwhelm the geeky astronomer in her. But she'll be fine.

Can't wait to see who the queen is.

Apparently, this is my block breaker story. I was stuck on an angsty scene in one of my other stories, started fiddling around with this one, and the next thing I knew, I'd written a whole chapter :)

Ewok Poet, Star Swirl is indeed a canon character, though he's only referenced in the TV series. He has a bigger role in the comics, where we learn he has at least one magic mirror capable of inter-dimensional travel. The Star Glass and the Pegasi meteor shower are my inventions.
I hadn't thought of this before, but I love the idea! :D The only question is, will he appear as a unicorn or a human...or something else?

    Chapter 3: Rarité

Twilight spun around on still unsteady legs at the sound of those cultured tones. Framed in the doorway was a pale young woman, one hand on her hip, the other pointing a strange silvery, cylindrical device at Twilight. She wore a light blue cut-away coat with a high collar and belled sleeves. It appeared to be some kind of uniform, though that seemed at odds with her dramatic pose and impeccably coiffed indigo hair. Looking at her, Twilight was instantly reminded of...
    "Rarity?"

Her mouth pursed into a moue. "That's Rarité, darling. And you are....?"

"Oh, um, hello..." She dipped her head uncertainly, wondering what the proper protocol for greeting someone was in this dimension. Dipping one's horn or bowing were the preferred way to introduce oneself, especially to royalty, in Equestria, while at Canterlot High, shaking hands sufficed no matter how high the status of the person you were greeting. To be on the safe side, Twilight awkwardly sketched a bow and offered a hand to Rarité, who did not take it. "I'm Twilight Sparkle. Princess Twilight Sparkle," she added, feeling that it was perhaps best to be formal under the circumstances.

Rarité's deep blue eyes widened with slightly more than polite disbelief. "Well, Twi'lek..."

    "Twilight."

"Yes, well.... " She gestured at Twilight with the silvery object she was holding. Twilight regarded it curiously; she'd never seen anything quite like it before. It reminded her vaguely of Applejack's weed sprayer or Pinkie's frosting squirter, but neither of those seemed to fit in this context. "You'll forgive me, but I have to search you for weapons now."

Weapons? She'd read about them in histories, of course, but no one had used such things since Celestia and Luna had unified Equestria and banished the monsters to Tartarus. "I assure you I don't have anything like that."

"I'm afraid I can't just take your word for it. So uncivilized, I know." Rarité sighed, as she began patting Twilight, in what she couldn't help but feel was a rather personal manner. "I do much prefer the more domestic duties of being a royal handmaiden...no one can do a the Queen's hair better than me, no matter what Suré says....but we're all expected to be able to defend the Queen as well as dress her hair. Naboo's rulers do have a way of finding themselves...." Rarité froze and then drew an object from Twilight's tunic. "No weapons, hmm?" she said, her friendly chatter turned frosty. "How do you explain this then?" She held up a delicate silver and black cylinder ornamented with purple and magenta buttons. As Rarité turned it in her hand, Twilight thought she saw a six pointed star engraved on it.

"I don't know," she said, shrugging helplessly. "I've never seen it before. What is it?"

"A lightsaber. The weapon of a Jedi," Rarité added, as if to a somewhat backwards filly, at Twilight's blank expression.

"I'm sorry; but I don't know what you're talking about. I've never heard of a 'lightsaber' or a...a 'Jedi.'"

"You've never heard of a Jedi? Do they not teach galactic history on Ryloth?" Rarité asked, pursing her lips in consternation.

    "Ryloth?"

"Perhaps you're from one of the other Twi'lek home worlds?"

"Twi...lek?" It was as if Rarité had suddenly started speaking a foreign language, and she was frowning at Twilight as if she was not just a little slow but terminally dim-witted. Twilight wished she still had her magic so that she could cast a translation spell or at least summon a dictionary.

    "Where exactly are you from?"

"You're not going to believe me." She wouldn't have believed it if it hadn't happened to her. As it was, the only difficulty Twilight had was believing that it had happened to her again.

"Try me, darling." Rarité waved the thing that was not a frosting squirter at her again. It seemed to be a command; Twilight really needed to find out what the silvery object was.

"All right..." She took a deep breath and explained, much as human Pinkie Pie had when she guessed the truth at Canterlot High. "I'm from a land called Equestria in an alternate world where I'm actually an alicorn princess. I came here through an inter-dimensional portal which connects Star Swirl the Bearded's Star Glass in Canterlot Castle's archives to your mirror there, and in the process of traveling between dimensions, I was transformed from my true form into, um, whatever this is," Twilight finished, indicating her current shape.

Rarité blinked, her turn to be utterly bewildered, and her mouth worked for a moment before she managed, "Inter-dimensional...alicorn? I'm...not familiar...with that species."

"Oh, well, it's an equine quadruped..."

    "You're...a horse?"

Twilight brightened. "Exactly! Except I also have wings and a horn."

She wouldn't have thought it was possible for Rarité's eyes to grow any larger. "Oh dear," she said faintly. "I think perhaps I should take you to see the Queen."

    Notes:
Suré is a reference to Suri Polomare, Rarity's rival fashion designer
Re horses and Naboo: there are equestrian statues in Theed, so I thought it was reasonable that Rarité would know what a horse was. Also, the Wook states that true horses exist elsewhere in the galaxy.

I suggest chironian or tchuukthai :D

    They look good :)

Is Rarité supposed to be a pale skinned human, a nagai (or other pale/white skinned human like species) or are you following Equetria Girls logic when it comes to human skin and hair colour?

Oh dear oh dear... Another Raissa story I love! I imagine that the youngling was beyond herself with glee.

Rarité is such a fantastic, fantastic character -- a perfect Naboo handmaiden, snob and tough at the same time. Seeing Twilight/Twi'lek lost in this universe is a real treat.
    ... and ...
Yes, she does need to find out sooner rather than later. It would fit nicely with her lightsaber -- because of course Twilight/Twi'lek would be a Jedi in the SW universe. I imagine that the lightsaber replaces her horn and will ultimately help her travel back to her own dimension?
You're doing such an amazing job at transferring the MLP characters to the GFFA that I can't wait to meet the queen. I know who it will be, but I want to see how you do it!

As a side note, I need to add that your drawings are so much prettier than the MLP cartoon that I can't watch it anymore. I find it bland and disappointing :p

My Son is a Brony and my daughters love MLP. Cute idea. My son writes and participates on a MLP fanfiction board, I kept telling him there should be a sw crossover.

Knowing that Rarity a) can be a piece of work from what I've seen so far, b) is voiced by Paulina Gillis, who seems to be QUITE a character (and voiced Asha in the Ewoks season one finale, but that's just a bit of useless trivia to groom you into seeing the cartoon); the illustration is absolutely spot-on and the chapter is HILARIOUS. Love it how Rarité is all classy and then, at the end, she's basically like OMGWHYDIDNTYOUSAYHORSE.

A wonderful contrast that never came to mind before!

While I am not familiar with this symbol per sé, I assume it's a symbol that will have great importance in Twilight's ultimate destiny in the GFFA. There wouldn't have been a symbol if she wasn't sent there for a reason. A very good reason.

P.S. With the way this is going, observing the actual characters, I wonder if it's only Twilight who will be a Jedi. Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy do have some Jedi-like abilities in their world, but I don't think they can be sanguine enough!.
