    Who's your pick for 1970s uber-geekmeister pop-culture transformer type?

Gary Gygax--inventor of Dungeons and Dragons

    OR

    George Lucas--inventor of Star Wars

    ?

Matt Groening, for Life in Hell, which gave rise to the Simpsons phenomenon, which gave rise to the Futurama phenomenon. And nothing gets geeks all a-flutter like the Simpsons and Futurama.

The Star Trek Roddenberry guy's impact was in the late '60s. While it is true that Gary Gygax was already up to things in the '60s, it was really the '70s where the Dungeons and Dragons phenomenon took off and there was all the allegations of Devil Worship, etc.

Both Lucas and Gygax admit their influences from others, whether they be JRR Tolkien or Flash Gordon, but they both really played a decisive role in the creation of the modern "geek culture"; I'm just curiuus which one of them you think is more important in this creation, not which is better, as Lucas clearly is the more talented, but I think Gygax had, perhaps, a more profound impact with the whole role playing thing, which really anticipated the world wide web in many ways.

Lucas invented more nerds than the Dungeons and Dragons guy could ever dream of.

I have to say Lucas. Though Star Wars still has a nerd stigma attached to it it is far more mainstream than D&D.

Gary Gygax appeared as himself in an episode of Futurama. It is a much needed boost to his performance in this peculiar little race.

    Amazing.

I was just about to point that out. Plus, I think it's safe to say that D&D has spawned way more nerds than Star Wars, given the fact that so many of them were simply sitting and rereading their Tolkien books without the added thrill of dice.

I've only ever played Eye of the Beholder video game, and due to the fact that I hated the spiders as well as the dumb ending, I'll vote for George.

I can't hate Gary enough for the part he played, however incidental, in this:

He rolled dice before making every decision (until Gore yelled at him [face_laugh]), and acted even nerdier than Stephen Hawking and Al Gore. :p

My group has not gamed for a few months now, but I am currenly playing a NG Female Elven Druid (Lv 7). This is my first time out playing a druid, and I am loving it. Usually I play an evil Priest, but the group wanted to do a good campaign for a change so I decided to go with something a little different.
