"Gary Oldman's voice will NOT be heard in the upcoming STAR WARS film. Gary was offered, and agreed to perform in the film, in fact he was excited and looking forward to the work. The snag that made it impossible however is that this film is being made as a non-SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) film. George Lucas and gang agreed to hire Gary Oldman if he in fact would become a union buster, and perform work illegally overseas. As a resident of America, and also a member of SAG, out of respect and solidarity with the other members, he could not and would not consider violating his union's rules."
You can read more here. This is really disappointing, I was really hyped for Gary's perfomance.

Who do you think will voice the General now?

Well if Oldman can't do it, it leaves the door open for Mark Hamill! :D

does this mean that all the A-Listers [ie. sammy jackson etc] are union busters?

and not that anyone knows, though i could venture a guess, but why is it ok for the rest of the actors?

That doesn't make sense to me either. I know Lucas works outside of the WGA & DGA, but this is the first I've ever heard of ROTS or the PT being non-SAG. It's kind of surprising and hard to believe.

I'm still treating this as a rumor. His "managing website" is really unprofessional. Hopefully we can get some real confirmation about it soon.

If the PT were completely non SAG, then what are Liam Neeson and Samuel L Jackson doing in the films?

I hope it's true cause I would rather have Mark Hamill be Grievous.

` I know Lucas works outside of the WGA & DGA'

I thought he signed back up for the prequels, to make work a little easier for production? (my sourse: these boards 8-} )

No, the reason Frank Darabont didn't write or do rewrites for The Phantom Menace was because he's a WGA supporter and didn't want to work outside the guild.

Hmmm....it's not like this was a little bump in the road, it's obviously pretty major.

I fail to see how the contract was already to go when "all of a sudden" the SAG problem came out of nowhere.

It doesn't make sense. I'll wait for an official pronouncement from the OS; if it's not Oldman, too bad, but I'm sure they'll find someone worthy.

Okay folks... some things to know.

    (1) ROTS is not shooting in America. Therefore it is not subject to SAG rules. SAG has no problem with such things.
    (2) You don't have to be signatory with all the unions to be a signatory with any given union. Yes, it's true, Lucas does not work with DGA or WGA people, but he can still work with SAG.
    (3) Many of the actors in ROTS (e.g. Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson) are SAG members, so they are subject to whatever Gary Oldman is.
    (4) The "Douglas Management Group" Web site, in terms of both design and language content, is not what I would expect to see from a professional agency.

In short, cast this whole thing out of your minds. Personally I think it's just one further kink in a rope of truly random crap.

Frankly...what's the big deal? I like Oldman as an actor but could care less who does the voiceover. Oldman's voice isn't distinctive like JEJ, so I don't see this as a loss or a gain either way.

I'd prefer someone unknown who has an interesting or distinctive voice of some sort. And with digital alteration it really doesn't matter who does it.

Adam is right, I have never heard of SAG being that controversial. Everyone and their brother is in SAG, it's really easy to get into. Actual unions are much harder to get into and have stronger political affliations and stricter rules. It seems really difficult to believe that Oldman being in SAG is preventing him from working.

I'm also skeptical about this rumor. I don't believe it's true. But if it is, it wouldn't bother me much.
