Gen "Urobuchter" Urobuchi is a rather famous Japanese light novel author and anime writer. His nickname comes from the fact that he kills his main characters a lot, that and he's the master of downer endings. He wrote two series that I love to pieces, Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works, that I haven't gotten to watch yet. If you have Netflix streaming, all these shows are available to watch in the U.S.

When he was writing the third movie in a trilogy of anime movies for his series Madoka Magica (a must see anime for sci-fi fans, the first two movies were recaps of the 12 episode show, the third is the continuation after the show) but he said in an interview that he was influenced by the architype of Darth Vader, specifically Episode 1-3 and Vader's downfall and that he fell because of love (Gen's mirroring of ROTS is amazing, he takes the themes from the movie and puts an amazing spin on them).

Here's the interview, look specifically in the Gen Urobuchi section

Mod Note: You probably should focus what you want to discuss in this thread. Its not entirely clear from the title of the thread.

I keep forgetting that the PT was very popular outside of the U.S.

Well, it is an amazing science fiction piece, but it's hard to talk about without mentioning spoilers after episode 2 of the show because every episode has a huge bomb to drop, but I love how he said he was influenced by Darth Vader's fall for what he did to his character Homura Akemi in the third movie, which I also can't talk about because it's the most devisive thing about whether people love or hate the movie.

Please do. It's one of the best shows I've ever seen. I really think everyone should see it.

Alternatively, you can watch the first two movies, which I hear act as a decent summary of the show. However, I think they cut content, so why not watch all 12 episodes?

I'm an OT fan and not a PT fan. I find it interesting that my gut reaction to Rebellion was that I didn't like it--specifically the last 20 minutes, which I won't spoil. The ending felt so sudden, and flew in the face of what I thought the series was about. I think I understand the intention, but on top of the intention itself being bothersome, the execution made it even worse.

Understand, I watched the movie right after I watched the show. Literally less than 24 hours afterward. I think if the show had ended the way the movie did, it could have worked, but the movie felt like an anticlimax and a betrayal of what the show was about. I'm fascinated by the fact that I have some of the same complaints about Rebellion that I did about the prequels. Namely, I worried that it cheapened the characters I had grown to love, and didn't do it in a way that made sense to me.

I'll add that I hate neither the prequels nor Rebellion. I do wish I'd allowed more time for the show to sink in before tackling the movie, and I think the whole thing taught me a bit about the types of stories I like.

Hmm. Do you have any sources or places where I can find sources about this? I like some foreign films (I'm from the U.S., so you know my definition of "foreign") and anime in particular. I've always thought the prequels felt a bit like anime, and imagined they were popular in Japan. Is this true? I'm curious what the reception was like and what accounts for the difference in the reception.
