Here we are on starwars.com GenCon news from Friday August 9th.

We both participated in the GenCon costume contest yesterday, August 10th wearing our 'Saturday' costumes.
Quincy won 1st place in her division, the children's catagory.
I won 1st place in the "Potluck" catagory.
Best overall was a group of about 12 people in the "Fantasy" catagory who made this amazing armor out of one of my favorite cheap materials, good ol' aluminum flashing!
I think they performed a short skit or something. Unfortunately, we couldn't see the other contestants until after we went out on the stage. I was in the 2nd to the last group out.

It was a lot of fun, but the venue that the contest was held in was maybe about 1/8th the size of the hall it was in last year.
Consequentially, it filled in 30 seconds and a lot of people who wanted to see the contest were turned away.
Next year GenCon will be held in Indy. Hopefully, the costume contest will ne held in a spot like the Sagamore Ballroom and then a whole lot more folks will be able to see the contest.

Here is a picture of my contest costume...after the contest. I had to change my shoes. My feet will be killing me for weeks now.....

As for the question of costuming at conventions; the only time I am not in costume is when I am sleeping or early in the morning and then I am wearing my "GOT ARMOR?" shirt.

Congrats on winning 1st place! Words fail me when trying to describe my reaction to that second pic. Probably because I'm giggling so hard. :)

    This was my intro:

    Ladies & Gentlemen --

-- direct from the dance halls of Coruscant --

-- the Gungan who aims to entertain --

    -- Zsa Zsa Binks !! --

Inspired by turn-of-the-century Parisian dance club fashions, this effulgent fuscia, teal and black number can (really) can-can-can!
-- and the Gungan under the multitude of ruffles might be able to too!

Jar Jar Gabor offers a feast for the eyes while she is light on her feet.........

....if she can stay on her feet.......

(then I tried to do a little dance to the Fat Boy Slim version of the can-can from Moulin Rouge)

    Nostradamus--

I would like to extend my congratulations to you and your daughter on your fabulous costumes and your 1st place wins!

You both brought the house down, and deservedly so! They were just wonderful. A large kudos to you both! :)

(...in case you're wondering, I was the Bespin Leia who took 2nd in the Sci-Fi category...)

    LeiaYT1300, Your costume is beautiful!

Quincy was pulling on me while everyone was lining up and told me she was going to find out if you were surlygurlie. I said I doubted she was going to be at GenCon, but your costume sure looked a lot like hers. :)

    Thanks, Nostradamus. [face_blush]

I was able to say hello to Quincy before we were interrupted by the contest organizers. I wanted to tell her how beautiful her costume was, especially since I knew of you both from lurking here at the costuming boards. Again, her costume was just gorgeous--the hand painting was simply marvelous! I have been to your website to see the other costumes you have made for her, and every one is a masterpiece. I can't to see how the purple senate gown turns out for her. :)

I could see how I was confused with Surlygirlie, though. Actually, I hadn't seen photos of Surly's costume until I was over halfway done with mine, but they do certainly look similar, and I let Surly know how wonderful her version is--her embroidery is just fabulous! She is the first among us to attempt this difficult costume, and her efforts (on all her costumes!) are truly remarkable.

Again, thank you for the compliment, and I look forward to seeing Quincy in her senate gown. I am glad to have met you both! :)

(Edit: Oh, these faces never seem to come out right... )

Now, I don't mean to bring up a flame war of any kind, but according to the rules of the GenCon contest, Professional costumers/clothiers or any winners of past contests were supposed to be in the "Professional" category.
Does that mean the costume that won a past contest, or does it mean the person?

Several weeks ago I asked the contest organisers how we should register. They were fine with the catagories we entered or they would have recatagorized us.

Nostradamus-- while I wasn't able to get into the costume contest (I couldn't believe they were holding it in that tiny room!) I did spot Quincy (and probably you, too :)) on the skywalk from the Hyatt to the con floor. Gorgeous costumes!

When I read that the costume event was
being held at the Hyatt, I figured that they would at least use that whole space. Steve Sansweet presented "Star Wars Connections" the EP I DVD promo and our first glimpse of EP II last year in that entire space (twice what was used)

Great pictures of you and Quincy! :)

(Also, I realized I may have confused you with Ferd and her daughter's upcoming Senate gown in my last post. My apologies--it would seem I haven't left my catatonic embroidery state. And there so many people making great costumes on these boards, that I lose track. But whatever costume you choose to make for Quincy next, I'm sure it will be fabulous! :) )

LeiaYT1300, I'm guessing that you're the Bespin Leia in the pic with Thrawn and Padme --
    Beautiful work!
Can't wait to see more of it.

I will be posting more scans of the gown, once I get a new scanner sometime this week(my current one hates XP).

    Thanks again! :)

I'm going to come out of lurking and say that all the cotumes rocked. Knowing how much time LeiaYT1300 spent on hers made me appreciate the fact that my Jedi costume took very little time and effort, appart from the leatherwork that will still have to be done later on.

Oh, and Karma - I still love your Padme costume. It's too bad I didn't run into you on Sunday: I ran into almost everyone else from the Friday night LARP that day!

I just want to say (along with all the members of the RMFF) that the Darth Jar that appears in the pictures is not the original one that appeared at CII.

That's all I want to say, no reply is expected. I just want you all to know.

I just gotta say it's a shame to ripoff such an original creation so poorly. I know imitation is supposed to be flattery...but not when it's done half-effort. :(

The original Darth Jar will always be the RMFF one.

The_Clone_Emperor, are you the Cloned Emperor from CII and GenCon?

Wow! I been wanting to do DEII Dark Jedi Luke which is "convertable" to DEII(?) Clone Emperor for so long now but guess I must refine my sewing skills first. :(
