Of all of the planets in Star Wars why would the Jedi have to go and pick an icy and snowy planet and name it Hoth in memory of General Hoth?

The Jedi honor him for his sacrifice. Easy as that.

Or Hoth was indeed remembered as a cold git.

He did end the Sith there at Ruusan. The last stand in the cave. Matters not if the planet was icy cold or hot as lava. Tis an honor.

He was a major figure for the Republic government as well as the Jedi Order, because they were closely aligned at the time.

A lot of newly discovered places get named after famous people, without any special connection. It's like asking, "of all the mountains in the US, why did they choose one in Colorado to name after President Lincoln?"

I presume that the thread author isn't so much questioning the justification of a planet being named after Lord Hoth, but that particular planet, known for its alarmingly low temperature. It's not exactly a flattering choice.

Well, in the chaos in the end of the New Sith Wars and the Ruusan Reformation, they probably weren't discovering new planets every day of the week. A crappy planet named after you is better than no planet.

True. But it is my understanding that Lord Hoth was a relatively cold and ruthless person as far as Jedi go. Perhaps the choice wasn't an all together inappropriate one?

    Have to agree.

Look at real life. Its not like these days you're ever going to get the honour of a new state being named after you. Maybe a street, but that's about it.

I'm sure there's probably a Churchill Street somewhere, or something. Bit late to declare a new country Churchilia or whatever though. Gotta take what you can get. I'm sure many an astronomer has had a giddy thrill ride over having a random meteor named after them; the days of having full constellations named after you have long since passed, after all.

Whoever Orion was, his Belt was immortalised a long, long time ago. :p

As I said above regardless about his character he LED[/i] the Jedi army & finished off the Sith army altogether in Ruusan!

I'm not sure what bearing that has. Did you mean that as an indicator of his ruthlessness or that he wasn't ruthless?

Hoth is the actual system, and the "Hoth" is one of the planets in the system.

    From Wook - http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Hoth_system

"But sir, the Hoth system is supposed to be devoid of Human forms."
¯Captain Firmus Piett, to Admiral Kendal Ozzel[src]
The Hoth system was a remote star system located on the fringe of the Ivax Nebula in the Anoat Sector of the Greater Javin in the Granita Cluster, along the Ison Trade Corridor at the edge of the Outer Rim Territories.[source?] The Hoth system was the one-time location of the Alliance to Restore the Republic's Echo Base; and in 3 ABY, the Battle of Hoth, a crushing defeat of the Rebellion by the Galactic Empire, led by Darth Vader.[1]

The system comprised six planets, including a wide and chaotic asteroid belt at the farthest orbit. Debris from this belt caused substantial meteorite activity on the planet Hoth.[1]

The Hoth system was possibly named after Hoth, the famous Jedi Master.

Being named after a system is a little better than just the iceball...

Maybe he took out a pirate base on one of the planets in the system before it had a designated name...

    From wook http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ordaj_Besh
Ordaj Besh was one of the seventeen moons of Ordaj. It had no known settlements, but may have been home to a pirate base at one time.

Or maybe Lord Hoth followed the grand tradition of Jedi who changed their names (like the Revanchist) and named himself after the planet... [face_thinking]

Or Hoth hadn't always been an ice planet... [face_thinking]

Then Bane turned into another planet and ate them.

Anotehr possibility- Ralph artwork (possibly in Illustrated SW Universe?) shows possible ruins scouted on Hoth of an unknown civilization- perhaps that civilization dates back to Hoth's time and named the planet in his honor before they dissapeared/died out.

Or maybe the author named him Hoth after the planet because of his personality, and then they thought there needed to be an actual reason why they have the same name but forgot to tell anybody....

Or maybe his Jedi spirit became trapped within the icy suface of the planet on it's way to join the force, spawning the wampa and tantuan species, who's dual nature represents the conflicting aspects of his personality. And when a Jedi passed by the system during a hyperspace jump he recognized the spirit of his former mentor and officially named Hoth after the fallen hero. <takes a bow>

IIRC, Hoth-the-planet is mentioned by name in a KOTOR-era source, meaning it had it's name before the Jedi Lord was ever born.

Mount Ingolfsfjall, which is located near Selfoss in Iceland, was named after the country's founder Ingolfur Arnason. Now, it's just a volcanic rock - nothing special - and not even the largest mountain in the country. Why did they name it after him? Because he lived at it's roots for his last years, and is buried on it's top. Why wouldn't they name something spectacular after him instead? Because the place meant something to him.

Hoth was a location of hope for the Rebel Alliance, to rebuild and resupply. If named by them, then it could serve as a reminder of what Hoth did for the Republic which they were fighting to restore. The Republic meant something to him.

In what source is that Ris_jSarek?
