In ANH Leia refers to Obi-Wan as "General Kenobi" and says "You served my father [Bail Organa] in the Clone Wars." While we see the Jedi leading the Clonetroopers into battle in AoTC, it seems unlikely that Jedi would be organized into a formal military command structure and assigned military ranks. Any ideas on how Obi-Wan will get the title "General"? Do you think it's just an honorary title, based on his service during the Wars? Or will Jedi Knights become the formal military leaders of the Clone Army?

Also, in what way will he serve Bail Organa? As a Loyalist defender against the Secessionists, or will Bail by this time be Palpatine's opponent? Any ideas?

Perhaps by the time Obi-Wan was known as "General" Kenobi, the Jedi Order has all but been decimated and Obi-Wan enlisted in the Republic's army to continue his service to the Republic and what it stood for.

    Bah.

    I think it's more honorary.

    I mean, "General" Solo.

    "General" Calrissian.

You're telling me that these guys know jack about the military?!?

    I don't think so.

I am sure that during the war, Obi-Wan is fighting on the side of the Republic. After all, Palpatine is fighting to maintain democracy right? ;)

JGM, that is an interesting idea, but if the film does begin with the end of the war, then the destruction on the Jedi Order will occur between films. I do not think that Lucas is that willing to anger the fans that have been waiting all this time to see the fall of the Jedi. It is likely that many of the Jedi will die in the war between films, but the Order will still be viable by the opening of Episode III. I do not think that Obi-Wan would ever leave the Order while it still existed.

I'm willing to bet that Episode III occurs in the thick of the war - most wars last at least 4 or 5 years, whereas Episode III takes place two years after AotC. But who knows what happens.

Don't forget, Jar Jar was also a "Bombad General!" :D

Yeah, the 'General' title seems to be given out to anyone in the SW universe. You're not cool if you haven't been a General at least once ;)

I'd suggest that Kenobi will be a General at the start of ep3. The war has been going for 2-3 years so, chances are, he's already pretty high in the military hierarchy

    In a way,

I guess it's not that surprising that Kenobi becomes a General.

He's extremely capable, loyal, intelligent, compassionate. All good commanders have these qualities.

i would agree that it is probably an honorary title. i mean the general label does seem to be thrown around pretty easily. it could be because in a sense, the military and jedi are fighting for the same thing and probably fight along side each other a lot, thus the jedi could be given kind of honorary titles. i wouldn't be surprised to see mace and definitely yoda also as generals if that's the case.

The Alliance seems to give out the title of General as a booby prize.

The alliance hands out rank much like in Rogue Squadron for the N64. Get enough medals and yer made a general :p As of now, you can call me Supreme Allied Commander Wascally Droid thank you very much!

Still, the gungans made Jar Jar a general, so the alliance can't be all that bad ;)

Now as for Kenobi, we see the Clones being led by Jedi in AotC. In Darth Sin's thread, he points out that they go from defenders of peace to Generals. When the Jedi are wiped out, the stormtroopers are then led by regular commanders (Veers for instance). So it's most likely that since the Jedi play an active role in commanding troops, they're given proper ranks such as general etc.

Here's an interesting supposition for you.

Why do Jedi command the Clones?

Besides the fact that they have the qualities I listed above (compassion, wisdom, etc.),

does the Force come into play in terms of military tactics?

Would Obi-Wan be leading troops and then suddenly think "I've got to pull in my flanks b/c the enemy is going to attack from the sides and attempt a pincer maneuver?"

    What do you think?
