Remember this? What's our continuity patch on this pivotal event in the galaxy? Let's face it, Bail Organa and Mon Mothma were ready to oppose the Empire from when Palpatine's declaration of a New Order's ink was wet. The massacre of the Jedi Temple, the murder of Supreme Chancellor Valorum, and the enslavement of Kashyyk all apparently were events that left Bail Organa bitterly opposed to the Empire. What role did Tarkin landing tax ships on protesters really accomplish? Or is it one more example of Arhul Hextrophon being a typical Academic and applying meaning to a minor event he's studied too much?
It might have provided the political catalyst they needed, being so close to the Core and all. People would care about Alderaan being blown up, but they probably wouldn't give a pile of mynock droppings if someone destroyed a backwater like Tatooine. Though the amount of people that a Carrack cruiser or whatever could crush would be minutely small on a galactic scale.
Arthul Hextaphon (or however you spell the guys name) may actually provide the answer. He indicated the event's criticism provided the rationale for Mon Mothma's arrest. Of course, what I love is this is what causes Governor Tarkin to be promoted to Moff Tarkin. Given Tarkin is supposed to already be building the Death Star, it makes me think that this happened during the Old Republic period. Of course, what makes me really love it is the implication that Tarkin is a Tax man. "Do not Kriff with the IRS."
Ghorman was in the Sern Sector - in other words, the sector represented by Sen. Fang Zar who was murdered in "Dark Lord". The fact that Tarkin was involved too is probably significant.
I always got the impression that this occured after Fang Zar left power. If he had still been alive, any act on par with what Tarkin performed would have probably been made public. Zar was one of the more vocal members of the Delegation of 2000 after all, and even tried to argue Palpatine's motives in his face a few times.
True. I wouldn't blame him for running if he had Tarkin on his tail. Speaking of Zar, am I the only one who was disappointed with his 2-bit role in Dark Lord? I mean, one minute he's standing there in all his brief cameo-appearance glory, and the next he's toast on Bail's front lawn. I thought the EU was actually going to do something with him, once they introduced the connection with Ghorman.
I'm thinking that it wasn't until this point that enough Like-Minded people knew how suitably outraged each other were. Consider Padme, Bail, Mon Mothma, and whomever else was in the room in the cut RoTS scenes as one "Rebel Cell". They were afraid to really talk to many people outside of their circle. How many circles of this type existed and how long did it take for those circles to interact? I'd say at about the time of the Ghorman Massacre, judging by the information.
