Hey guys, it has come time for me to buy a new camera. The GL-1 is tempting right now since the prices on ebay are dropping do to the release of the GL-2. First off, does the GL-1 have Manual Iris Control? And can the GL-1 shoot in Progressive Scan? Please post any other differences you know of also, thx.
I personally think the GL1's a great piece of machinery. Answers to your question, yes and yes. Though I hear the GL2 takes the GL1 up a notch (of course, Canon's got to.... it's the new edition)
Brent my friend, if you are in the market for a new camera, don't get the GL-1. While it is a good camera, it's a bit out-dated. In May Panasonic is releasing a 3CCD chip camera that will be under $1000. Even though the chip sizes are 1/6th inch. But each chip has 460,000 pixels. So, stick that in your pipe and smoke it. However, if money isn't an issue, get the AG-DVX100 from Panasonic.
In May Panasonic is releasing a 3CCD chip camera that will be under $1000. Sounds too good to be true. I'd prefer a GL-2, personally.
Hmm... this comes close (too big for clickie): http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bh4.sph/FrameWork.class?FNC=ProductActivator__Aproductlist_html___227945___PAAGEZ50___REG___CatID=2701___SID=F47513ECC80 or this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bh4.sph/FrameWork.class?FNC=ProductActivator__Aproductlist_html___800271190___271190___USE___CatID=2935___SID=F47513ECC80
AG-DVX100 ... Yeah im curious what everyone thinks of the camera. Considering im a week away from forking out the dinero for it.
As for the second URL, Krapitino: Sorry, this item was not found. Please select another item by using the search box on the top of this page or by browsing through our departments on the left. Thank you. When's the XL2 gonna come out? And when's the GL3 gonna come out?
Well non-believers, it doesn't get any more official than this.... Panasonic 3CCD Palmcorder SkywalkerG: The AG-DVX100 is the best Mini DV camera that exists for professional quality work. I don't want to hear anyone contest that statement, as it IS a FACT and NOT an OPINION. AWB: The Canon XL2 is rumored to make an apperance at NAB in April. So if the XL2 is going to come out, we will find out about it very soon. My filmmaking teacher is going to be at NAB. The XL2 is rumored to have 24p, 30p, and 60i. It's also RUMORED to have 16:9 shooting capability. Guess we will just have to wait and see. About the GL3.....that probably won't be out for another 2-3 years. On a side note, I saw the Blue Angels perform today, and the guys from the news station I work at didn't want to haul huge DVCPRO cameras over there, so they filmed the airshow at 30p on a AG-DVX100, and then it was broadcast on TV tonight. It looked just like film. Very awesome. Amazing picture quality.
The AG-DVX100 is the best Mini DV camera that exists for professional quality work. I don't want to hear anyone contest that statement, as it IS a FACT and NOT an OPINION. That's untrue. The word 'best' is related to the word 'good' which is desirable. And a desire is an opinion, therefore it is not a fact. Hence you are wrong about it being a fact. It might exist for professional quality work and maybe that's a fact, but the fact about it being the BEST Mini DV camera is not a fact. So there.
Cool. Im gonna hold off and wait to see whats around the corner as far as cameras go. I'll be attending NAB.
I want the JVC GR-HD1. Who can ague with a 1.18 million pixel progressive scan CCD that does 720p? This will be an awesome camera when it comes out! Clickie SWmaster
The next few years are going to be exciting. I cant wait to see what king of cameras are coming. It sucks that some manufacturers are putting mini dvd burners instead of tape drives on some cameras though! Dvd's are small enough and when you use a 3 inch dvd it will be even smaller. A normal dv tape holds about 15gig and a full size dvd-r only holds 4.7. I mini dvd probably wont hold more than 2 gig so you wont have very long recording times. I also dont want to be constantly having to buy more dvd-r's just to record stuff! I want to see some cameras come out that use D-VHS. They support up to 4 hours of 1080i or 720p video! Make sure you read the article I posted. It has some very informative parts on HD cameras. SWmaster
The one thing that confuses me with the whole MiniHD thing is the fact that it is stored on tape in compressed mpeg2 format, so even you are using a miniDVD, which clock in at about 2gb, you can still get about 45min-1hr recording time per disc. On tape, if the mpeg2 compression scheme is used, you should be able to record HOURS on 1 mindv tape. Of course, this is all speculation on my part, as I am not too familiar with how this works, D-VHS decks have firewire ports, however you would need an array fast enough to capture HD footage at 1900x1200 resolution( unless the mpeg2 compression helps remedy this) Anyone with any REAL FACTUAL info on this, please chime in....
Can you imagine if you bumped your camera around while you were filming with mini dvd! It would probably mess up the burner and might even mess up the whole dvd! SWmaster
swmaster: I very much dought that it is burning live. I bet they store a few seconds of video into RAM and then write to the DVD as a delay. Kinda like CD Players with that antiskip stuff so if you bump the CD player it is reading ahead and you have a few seconds in RAM for the lazer to recover and start reading the CD again.
Pretend I found the following MiniDV 3CCD camcorders: -Canon GL2 for $1,829 -Panasonic PV-DV952 for $1,095 -Panasonic PV-GS70 for $1,000 -Sony DCR-VX2000 for $1,789 Assuming I had enough money (hah hah), which one should I get? Or should I wait? --Colin
Your probably right Brent. But I doubt that the have much skip protection. The amount of ram needed to get reasonable skip protection would be huge. And the more ram you need the more it costs and the less battery time you get. SWmaster
The AG-DVX100 is a VERY nice camera indeed Pixel. We're starting to see more Indie producers switching to it from their PD-150's. Adam Wilt loves this camera and what he says carries a lot of weight in the DV community.
