Are Regional Governors and sector Moffs one and the same? Both oversee Imperial sectors, and I can't really see any differances between them - Tarkin appears to be both an Imperial Governor and a (Grand) Moff. Or perhaps Moffs are Regional Governors with increased power and influence?

Also, do we know of any Regional Governors other than Tarkin?

Moffs oversee 1 Sector, Grand Moffs oversee a larger galactic territory, like the whole Outer Rim for Tarkin. governeur was his job before that, governor of eriadu, it is not the same.

Yes. Regional governors and moffs are one and the same. Tarkin was only the first Grand Moff to be appointed, and his position was unique at the time of ANH.

I knew Tarkin was the first, but I thought more had been appointed by the time he took command of the Death Star. Where is the "his position was unique at the time of ANH" from?

His command was a special circumstance for the Rim. There generally weren't many Grand Moffs to begin with--they didn't really jump numbers until the Hoth era.

    And it's from the ISB.

Do you happen to recall where? In the section under "Grand Moffs," it doesn't say how many there are, but it implies that from the start there were more than one.

    From page 11:

"Taking the advice from one of his Moffs, Tarkin, the Emperor formed priority sectorS . . . The title of Grand Moff is also granted to the being in charge of a priority sector" (emphasis mine).

From the wording, it seems to me he created more than one priority sector at once, and thus more than one Grand Moff to command them.

Long story short, Imperial governors = Imperial moffs, and moffs < grand moffs.

So . . . mofflings are just govenors of notable regions, right?

Well, not exactly. *Regional* governors seem to be the same thing as Moffs, but when the term isn't qualified in that way, it seems to mean governor of a single world or system.

"It is not unusual for a Moff to also serve as a governor of a particularly favored world within his sector."

Well, I'd tried to address that by specifying "Imperial" governors as opposed to planetary governors, but I can see how I was rather opaque in my post.

    I'm assuming:

Planetary governors=Governor of a single planet, perhaps a system.

Regional Governors=Moffs=In command of a single sector and the 1600-2400 ships that make up an Imperial Sector Group

Grand Moff=In charge of multiple sectors, or in Tarkin's case, the entire Outer Rim Territories.

Since Moffs are Regional Governors, officers such as Jerjerrod and Disra use both titles interchangeably?

Presumably. They could use 'governor' more often in a political sense, and 'moff' to more emphasize their military status. Same thing, different connotations.

    Spike 2002:

Grand Moff=In charge of multiple sectors, or in Tarkin's case, the entire Outer Rim Territories.

Technically, in charge of an Oversector (also called a Priority Sector), which freely cross existing sector boundaries, though it need not; indeed, the Death Star Project was regarded as an Priority Sector unto itself (ISB 11).

Did Tarkin's Oversector Outer encompass the entire Outer Rim? If so, it didn't for very long, because we know that the Bright Jewel Oversector encompassed Ord Mantell and Yavin during the Imperial blockade right after the destruction of the first Death Star.

I'm pretty sure Oversector Outer meant most, if not all, of the Outer Rim under his jurisdiction, which he ruled from Eriadu.

Could Tarkin have been a "first among equals" in regards to the Grand Moffs and so was able to boss around the other priority sectors?

Well, he was the first Grand Moff as I recall. Not sure if he was the only one until his death and then Palpatine began spreading the ranks around other officials.

Tarkin was the first Grand Moff, but others were also appointed to the rank before he died (like Trachta).

My theory is Tarkin drastically reduced the size of the Oversectors to maintain a grip on the Grand Moffs. Tarkin was theoretically able to control not only the Death Star but Vader.

    Vader respected Tarkin unlike many.

Tarkin wasn't afraid of Vader yet he also wasn't an idiot like Motti.

I wonder how willing was Vader to 'discipline' Tarkin if the Grand Moff had tried to do anything treasonous (I personally don't by those rumors about Tarkin having convinced Vader to join him in overthrowing the Emperor)

Vader would serve the victor of their conflict.

    ;-)

For about 2 seconds if it was Tarkin
