I'm sorry if I'm asking a question recently asked (this is my first post here, and I didn't look beyond the first page) but you people all seem very informed and helpful :)
Anyway, I'm going to a costume/birthday party soon, and wanted to go as a SW character I made up (smuggler named Solitaire Flagranté) and have the costume and everything, but for some crazy reason I'd decided she has black hair. Mine is light brown, but I really want to do it a different color! Does anyone know where I could find an affordable, nonpermanent (as in, out in 3 or 4 washings) hair coloring? I've looked at WalMart, Sally Beauty, and several other places, but all I found were hair-streaking kits or semi-permanent dye. I'm afraid with my light-ish, fine hair, semi-permanent might damage it or turn me into a brunette for months. Any suggestions?

    Regards,
    ~Solitaire

I second the wig idea. And for NO REASON use cheap, black permanent hair dye, and use bright blonde dye to turn it back. While it appears to work in theory, it DOES NOT WORK in real life, as one of my best friends found out. She spent more time having the hair disaster undone than it took to create it.

Try Manic panic. It's at sally's, and hot topic. For about one day it gives a decent color, but it will wash out quickly. And by no means go swimming in a pool the chlorine reacts and it melts away and you end up coloring the water :p

But dyeing hair permanently is so much fun! :D (I recently lightened mine and was accused of going to a rave .. go figure)

    Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
Daala and Stormtrooper Princess: do you have any great websites for wigs?

And yes, I thought momentarily about dying my hair permanently and leaving it that way...but then I remembered that black with blonde roots is probably the most unnatural combination ever :D

My sister has platnum blond hair, probably one of the lightest shades you can get. But she has her hair dyed onyx black. It is really funny when her roots start to show, she has a white stripe down her head. But it isn't too bad. You just have to remember to do matinence on it regularly, or bleach you hair back to the regular color (which should only be done by a professional, that stuff is potent).

you could try local costume shops in your area first and then large beauty/hair supply shops or speak to the person who cuts your hair- that person should know best places to look for wigs in your area

when do you need your wig?

    Thanks a bunch, everyone!

HOLD IT HOLD IT HOLD IT!!!!
Now that I have everyone's attention...
I am a licensed hairdresser, as many of you know...and here is my stance.
DO NOT by any means put black dye on your hair-definitely not permanent, and not even semi-permanant that says it will wash out in a few shampoos-not even Manic Panic. All of these can stain lighter hair.
Hair color is to be used by professionals-we are trained to do this. There is a science to it. Over the counter hair color was something created to torture the professional by giving us disasters to try and fix.
Let's say 4 girls came to me and wanted their hair Reba McIntyre red hair...I would mix up a DIFFERENT formula for each girl, depending on her natural hair color, hair condition, etc. Over the counter gives the same formula to everyone-and then they wonder why it is not the color on the box.
My advice is to use what old ladies use to cover their gray hair when they do not want to color it. There is a product called Fanciful rinse-it washes out in ONE shampoo-it is just a coating and will sweat off or run if you get your hair wet. Otherwise I would use an aerosol spray Halloween black hair color-it may be hard to find this time of year. Use a clarifying shampoo afterwards-like Redken cleansing creme, to make sure there is no stain left on the hair.
If you do not want to do that-go with the wig-there are a ton of internet wig sites.
