Do you think a hakama would be good attire for a jedi? I'm making a fanfilm soon and would just like to know what everyone thinks. For those who don't know a hakama is the pleated pants that samurai wore. They look like a dress until you spread the legs apart.
    Thanx!

hmm... I don't know quite what your talking about but I do have an idea.. like the really baggy pants... ehh I don't know if that would look to great for a jedi... maybe black and do it as a sith, but not a jedi, jedi have more of a traditional... formal type of appearance.

Funny you should bring it up. I came to the conclusion that a(an?) hakama would make for great Jedi attire, and have a lady on another board in the process of making a pair for me. I'm in no big hurry, just suggesting that having it in time for DragonCon would be nice. When it's done I'll be sure to post pics.

And if there are any suggestions for footwear - I can't really see standard Jedi boots with hakama, unless they're tucked in to the boots - I'm all ears.

GL has written his last chapter. Now is the time for the Star wars Univers to evolve on it's own. "Jedi have a formal attire." Secura's tightly worn leather was far from formal. Obi Wan wore armor in the Clone Wars series. Depending on your time period, maybe there is no Jedi Council to dictate dress. Maybe that is a good thing. Who is it that says the Jedi Council should dictate how we use the Force? Look where the Jedi Council has brought us? The Emperor has brought Peace and order to the Galaxy. Is that so bad?

Anyway, as I said, let the fans determine what is "allowed". Where do groups like the 501st get off saying what you can and cannot wear? Ironic that the 501st represents the Imperial rule in a way that the Empeoro would be proud...

Wear what you like. The Force will be with you no matter what clothing you don...

hmmm...footwear...well, for my fanfilm i'll be wearing black vans shoes because they're comfortable. Luke wore black in ROTJ, so I dont see a problem with a black hakama...Maybe it'll go good with a white/beige gi top and black/brown tabards. My character sort of sits on the fence between the dark side and the light side of the force.

I made a loose kind of pleated pants for my sith costume. I wanted them to look kind of like Hakama without using an actual pattern. You can see them on my making-of page here:

I use a hakama for my Sith costume. It disguises movement, very Sith like. Plus, I can wear any footwear with it!

Darth Revan in KotoR wears what looks like a hakama, together with some other Samurai-looking armor.

this is to DarthGyos.: Be careful with a hakama. They actually aren't supposed to hide foot movment. If you can't see someon'es feet. then hakama is way too long and you could easily trip over it while jumping/spinning/fighting in general. Get/make something about ankle length, or if it must be long have it just brush the top of you foot just behind the toes.
To DarthLars: Can you send me a pic?

If I remember right, those guys in duality put Rive in a Hakama to make him more "bottom" heavy, and give him a more Japanese style outline. That's where I got the idea from, besides the fact that i'm dirt poor and I just happen to wear a hakama for my multiple martial arts

Good idea, since jedi are inspired from the Samurai or Bushi I think it would be a good idea. I'd just use the Hakama that I use in Kendo and Aikido.

Instead of wearing regular hakama that might trip you up while you're in a duel, you might want to try ninja-style tattsuke hakama. You can find some here at Bokunan-do. Here is a link to the tattsuke hakama. You can also find complete shinobi shozuku(ninja outfit) at Shinobi Ya. They are some much better than the mass produced ones that companies like Tiger Claw make.

At CIII, there was a guy in a Jedi costume who wore a Hakama. He looked very Jedi to me, so I don't see a problem with it. IMO, it would be very appropriate.

Yeah, I think a hakama would look great. Probably better for a Sith, because you can do black. But going by the non-standard garb a lot of Jedi seem to wear - (Shaak Ti, Luminara, Bariss, Aayla, etc.) it definitely could fit.

depending on who you're talking to, vamphunter, that's a good idea, but if you're talking to me, for some reason I find the regular hakama a bit more comfy to wear, and they look cooler for what i'll be doing. Martial artists who are used to hakama will find them a great deal less cumbersome. They just take some getting used to. I'll post a pic of me in a hak so you can see what it looks like.

The Jedi's I was going to make was doing a mock of the pleated pants but as a robe. I was pleading the entire body to give that look, so honestly Hakama would be great for it. :)

I was doing snazzy Jedi robes, but using the concept your thinking of. I think it'll look great!

Nice to see another Martial artist around these forums. :)

From what I've heard Iwama Ryu was based on the Iwama dojo taught by Morihiro and emphasis alot on weapon training. It's a very old branch of Aikido and I'm wondering where you go to train?

You're right. Iwama style is a very old style that focuses on weapons training slightly more than other styles. I train at a very small dojo in San Leandro, California under Patricia Hendricks Sensei.

That's what I look like In a hakama. Just replace that sword with a lightsaber! (if anyone feels like it, please animate over that sword with a lightsaber.)
