I heard that the coat is really just a white lab coat that they painted. They have this spray t-shirt paint at crafts stores and that would work just as well as dyeing the fabric. Check a uniform store for the lab coat...

i actually heard that also, i check a couple of stores and after watching ROTJ his coat is really long, and the ones for sale go down to the butt...ave about 36 inches, i think i would need a 50 inch coat

There's a good bit of information about the Rebel Commandos here:

Granted it's not specifically about Han's outfit, but it might have some info you can use.

I have just finished mine. And I can tell you that it is definitely not a lab coat. It may have been based off a lab coat or a lab coat pattern. But lab coats are always too short. Han's duster (and the Rebel Commando dusters) comes down to his lower calves and has these big balloon pockets. Looking at some publicity photos, it also looks like the collar may have been cut down to somewhere between standard and mandarin to make it look better when stood up as Han wore it most of the time.

All that said, I decided to just buy a long lab coat and just go with that instead of trying to have something made that was long enough. Not many people know how the long the coat is anyway and it's a rarely seen costume.

What we do know is that the jacket was custom painted to a camoflauge pattern. The color scheme on Han's duster is shared only by Luke's poncho and is not the same bright green and tan as the Commandos. The movie version was probably airbrushed with fabric paint or something of that nature. It seems to be comprised of a Dark Green and Dark Brown over white or grey.

For my duster (and my Rebel Legion base's Commando dusters) we used a sprayable fabric paint used for painting fabric flowers. It's made by Design Master called ColorTool and can be found at Michael's or local craft stores or online.

For my coat we used a base of Moss Green:

    Then October Brown:

Then some Ivory to tone it down:

You could use some black if you want it darker and not as rich color-wise. I was luck enough to have someone paint mine while I was wearing it.

I got my lab coat at Automotive Workwear. They sell a "long" version that work better for length. I have also heard of someone getting a white butcher's jacket that was long enough. The jacket shout be split up the back to nearly the waist.

    Hope that answers any questions.

Of course, it doesn't matter how camouflaged you are, if you just end up running around with a gold-plated droid... ;)

I work in a grocery store, and the mention of a butcher's coat... It's a good idea. The guys in meat department have these white coat things that come down to almost the knee. I don't know where you'd get one though.

I just did a quick search and found lots of places that have these coats, the cheapest I've seen so far is $13.75 at a place called Automotive Workwear.

It looks like 45" is probably the longest you're going to find. I've heard of some people adding more fabric to the bottom to make them longer still.

I work at a Winn Dixie in the meat department and our butchers coats come pretty close to this. THey're longer than a lab coat too.

If you are hardcore, you'll have someone else paint it while you wear it.
