    Hello one and all!!

I had this dvd for quite a while but never really got around to watching it due to the almost dreadful reviews I had heard from friends and family.

But after seeing Red Dragon, I got the sudden urge to watch Hannibal.

I thought it was a good movie. Never have I read the book (Which is why I will ask what I will in a seccy). The only thing I didn't like and could almost put in the category of loathe was the questions it left unanswered. So I'm hoping that my good mates here at the JC will be able to answer them please :)

-What was the cause of the disfiguration to Mason Vergers face? (I might have missed if it was told in the film, was kind of distracted in parts from a very bored girlfriend).

-Does Paul Krendler actually die after his eating that really nice brain food? Or does he actually survive? (Sorry if that is a stupid question, but the whole idea itself could be called stupid if I wasn't open to that sort of thing).

-How did Hannibal Lecter become a killer to begin with? And why does he eat his victims?

-What was the true ending from the novel that many fans wished for the film?

It would be great to have all these answered! And maybe we can start up some good discussion on this film too. I liked how Lecter was now the one being chased. He is such a calm character and I laughed when he was about to kill Inspector Pazzi with the words "oki doki". hehehe.

Why don't you watch the movie again when your girlfriend isn't around or so..."bored"?

And why does he eat his victims?

    Because he is insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have it on dvd, but only watched about half. I'll make sure to watch it and get back to you on those questions. Someone else will probably beat me to it but I'll still watch just in case. :) -Max

Hannibal was pretty much a gorefest and I didn't get into it. I haven't seen Red Dragon though yet, how does it compare?

Silence of the Lambs, however, one of the scariest and best pyschological thrillers of all time!

Hannibal, after eating a clown: "Does this taste funny or is it just me?"

Red Dragon compares far more to Silence than Hannibal does. All 3 are fairly different, I like the fact that Red Dragon doesn't rely so much on gore for it's scares.

Ralph Fiennes believe it or not is PERFECT in his role as the villain. He plays it so good you actually feel sympathetic to the character!

And Lecter is better behind the glass than as the main character I guess. He just comes off as moe chilling (And more threatening too I feel). The less we see of him, the better, for what we do is great stuff.

I'd rate them in the following order.

    Silence of the Lambs.
    Red Dragon.

Hannibal (Good for what it was for sure, but doesn't really compare to the other two).

Did you see Manhunter? That's the 80's version of Red Dragon. I've heard it's even better than Red Dragon. Michael Mann directed it.
    check it out.

Expect spoilers for the book, Hannibal to follow.

-What was the cause of the disfiguration to Mason Vergers face? (I might have missed if it was told in the film, was kind of distracted in parts from a very bored girlfriend).

Lecter drugged him when he was a patient of Lecter's, got him to cut much of his face off and then feed it to a dog.

-Does Paul Krendler actually die after his eating that really nice brain food? Or does he actually survive? (Sorry if that is a stupid question, but the whole idea itself could be called stupid if I wasn't open to that sort of thing).

He dies in the movie and book. In the book, Lecter gets tired of his bawdy comments to Clarice and shoots him with a crossbow.

-How did Hannibal Lecter become a killer to begin with? And why does he eat his victims?

As a child, he was witness to a great brutality. Several members of his family were killed and eaten before his eyes by starving hunters (I believe). This all took place in Russia a long time ago. Cannibalism became a way to get back at those who wronged his delicate sensibilities. He is also a sociopath.

-What was the true ending from the novel that many fans wished for the film?

Lecter and Clarice run off together, meaning they are forevermore a romantic item (and far more than that intellectually). Many fans were outraged, but it does fit if you actually read Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. The clues are all there.

The cause of disfiguration to Verger's fgace is in the film. He's being treated by Lecter and they have a meal together. Lecter offers him a popper, and then tells him to cut off his face (handing hims a piece of glass).

I don't know about the guy whose eaten his own brain... ?[face_plain]

The other questions will have to come from someone who's read the books :)

I am a HUGE Hannibal Lecter fan...I've read all the books countless times and same with the movies...but I think Red Dragon is the best of the movies and the books...but SOTL and Hannibal are both excellent and Im very happy that we have the proper Hannibal Trilogy with Sir Tony Hopkins in all three...Manhunter is excellent but it has some problems...for one Dolarhyde in Manhunter is not the same as in the book Red Dragon...the movie Red Dragon is exactly as I envisioned Dolarhyde...a big man who is rather good looking...in Manhunter hes bald and skinny...not the Dolarhyde from the book...

Hannibal's parents were aritocrats. Mother was an aritocrat from Florence (part of the reason he went to Florence is to look at his family history). During WWII, either the German or Russina army bombed the castle in Lithuania that Lector lived in, as a 9 year old. His parents got killed but his sister (who is really loved) and he survived. Diserters (russian or german, can't remember) take over their home, and every one is starving. So they kill Lector's sister and eat her. What Lector wanted to do, really, with Clarise, was kill her and let his sister take her place (best I can figure is he thinks time can go backwards. He was either watching a pbs special, with Hawkins or another famous scientist talking about time going back on itself), but she sort of seduces him.

One thing I wish the included in the movie was the sister of Mason. She was the one who killed him.

Thing about it is her brother sexually abused her and dislocated her arm. Dr. Lector had both as his patients, but he treated the sister quite well. Lector even took the blame on Mason's death.

So it seems, comparing Mason and Lector, that Mason was the real villian. It's just in Red Dragon and SotL, Lector just seems wierd, for liking cannibalism. And in Hannibal, he just kills bad people, but he is really insane for thinking he can bring back his sister to life by taking Clarice's life. She counters that he could take his own life, and she and his sister Mischa can live like sisters.

Silence of the Lambs was so well done. It had the disturbing material but didn't need to cast it in your face to make the point. Hannibal was good but it tried way too hard. Yes, we got it. He likes flesh. Understood.
