Hey all, this is a gathering for anyone, who likes, loves, or is interested in the lovely, deadly, and wealthy Hapes consortium.

    I hope this thread grows.

I´ve always found the general concept of Hapes pretty intriguing, kinda this place of the galaxy that has been isolated for so long before returning to the surface again and beginning to interact with others. Would have wished this angle had been explored a bit more on the Hapan end of things, we often see Hapes influence events outside of their territory, manly through their military, though we rarely get a glimpse of how interacting with a more liberal world surrounding them effects theirs.

It's one of my favourite places in GFFA, so here's a map of the Hapes Cluster.

@Anedon, I agree we should have seen more of how Hapan society interacted with the broader Galaxy.

@Amon_Amarth-the transitory mists seem to provide some level of defense for the Hapans. Which is probably part of how they retained their independence.

It's a spiral, allowing for the Hapans to play defensive if they are ever invaded.

@Amon_Amarth - I never realised Shedu Maad was in the Hapes Cluster! That's a pretty cool map there ;)

Looking at the maps, the whole Hapes Cluster more massive that I recall from reading the books. WEG and WOTC RPG sourcebooks had quite lot of extra info. Thinking about it now, I really want to run an adventure where the players would visit Hapes.

Great idea, if you would want to do it in the RPG I would be intrested to join, if I find the time for it.

Being a dice roller, I never got into forum RPG. ;) I'd run this in Saga or WEG editions. It's may have to be over rolld20 as my local gaming friends are only into D&D 5E. I'm hoping there might be people at Celebration willing to do an adventure.

There is actually an online RP forum for Hapes: hapes.org. I don't know much about the game itself, but the website is really well developed... I've used it to research my fanfic stuff.

For as well-known as Hapes is...we really don't know that much about it, which is a shame.

I actually tried to create an account on that site, they said they would get back to me, but they never did.

That would explain why it seems to be a pretty quiet site, then!

    Yeah, it's quite a shame.

Anyway-@SiouxFan given you've written some fics with a heavy Hapan focus, what is your impression of Hapan court culture?

I'll be honest, I don't know what to make of the 'court culture'. Mainly, because the books do such a horrible job describing it. As I recall, CoPL does a fairly decent job of setting up the background, but later authors don't do much to flesh out society. They basically show us a group of nobles lounging around the Palace. What do they DO?

I'm assuming Hapes was initially based off of the courts of medieval Europe...everyone maneuvering and vying for power...but the various Lords and Counts and whatever had actual DUTIES, something that is never explained about the Hapan nobility. So...I ignored the nobility altogether in my stories and focused on what has to be a strong civil service.

I imagine a lot of the nobles have some jobs-either in the government or military.

Or they hold the places on boards of major corporations.

Or maybe they are a leisure class, but I would think they would need powerbases and money besides the inheritance of their estates to carry out their scheming and maneuvering.

That is pretty much what I was thinking...something along the lines of what the Chiss do; each house in charge of a given government sector? Their are problems with this, of course. Such an agreement would create a 'group think' in each department after a while.

My headcanon is that there is an institutional barrier of sorts regarding noble scheming and the hapan military and civil service-the unspoken rule is "scheme, plot and murder to your heart's content, but don't ever involve the military in your court intrigues and palace coups" a sort of rail in hapan politics, a norm that simply is not crossed or breached.

Exactly! Again, this does bring up issues...it would tend to make the civil service stronger than the monarchy...but would lead to a more stable government.

The Hapes consortium is one thing I REALLY miss from the old EU. There wasn't nearly enough content for it. To my taste, at least. :)

Heck, there is hardly any. And what we do get paints Hapes as this one-dimensional, back-stabbing society...Which it simply cannot be.

The Hapan nobility do the backstabbing and plotting.

The Hapan military seems generally loyal and devoted to their queen and country.

We don’t see most of the general hapan population but I doubt they are involved in the insular plots of the nobility.
