What the **** is kwaanzaa anyway?

I know it involves Barry White music and the sipping of cognac, but after that it's all a blur.

I heard it was a holiday for African-Americans to wish they were Africans.

Are Egyptians living in America considered as ''African-Americans''?

Funny story. A friend of mine from Freshman year got in trouble for claiming that she was an African-American. Her father's Egyptian, and she was born in Egypt, and she had fun pointing to Egypt on a map of Africa.

    AFFIRMATIVE ACTION STRIKES AGAIN!

Had a guy that I once worked with that was white as any other Caucasian, yet was born in South Africa. He tended to drive people a little crazy when he said he was African-American. [face_laugh]

I had myself a good laugh when I was at a summer science program for black folk and one of the black girls got offended when a white speaker referred to her and other black people with the term "black" instead of African-American, despite the fact that she had used "Caucasian" to refer to white people and "African-American" to refer to black people. Which normally wouldn't be funny, except for the fact that she was from the West Indies.

West Indian black slaves came from the same place as the mainland North American ones...

Now, if she was Melanesian, you'd have a point.

My point was that she wasn't "American", not that she wasn't African.

West Indies are in the Americas. Apparently, Canadians and some of the folks on our continental system have the gall not to concede the term "American" to mean just our country. o_O

I play Rugby with a Tanzanian who has red hair and freckles. He's the whitest guy on our team but he's still African-American (He was born in Tanzania and his parents still live there, but I think he has American citizenship now too).

We've also got a prince from Cameroon. He's a big dude. I think both played on their under 19 national teams.

Whenever people make references to "Americans", it is understood that they are referring to people from the United States of America. No amount of geographical handwaving negates that. American is a slang term(yeah, I said it) for someone from the US that just happens to resemble another word referring to either of two continents.

Mostly I'm just giving you a hard time, but I've known people from the Caribbean and Canada and Peru who get really pissed about the whole "America" thing. Why do we get to claim the whole continent? :p
