www.starwars.com: Chronicling the Clone Wars

LucasArts Entertainment Company has already chronicled the earliest events of the war with their recently released Star Wars: The Clone Wars video game. Starting with the Battle of Geonosis, this game moves to other battlefields on distant worlds. Future titles are in the works with more Clone War action.

There is talk of the next 3 years prior to Episode III having "real time" Clone Wars books, comics and yes, video games to tell the story of the progression of the Clone Wars between the end of AOTC and the start of Ep3.

See also the rumours of an animated (CG?) [link=http://boards.theforce.net/message.asp?topic=9507081]Clone Wars TV series[/link]!

The OS confirms video games will pay a part in this story arc.

With the line Ben speaks in ANH "'He was the best star-pilot in the galaxy' " we know Anakin is an ace pilot during this time period.

SO, what are the chances that we will see an X-wing style space combat simulator set during the Clone Wars?

Is it beyond possibilty that Larry Holland's Totally Games will be able to utilise the engine for the LEC WWII flight sim for a Clone Wars game.

Could the flight sim simply be a cover for a new Clone Wars game?

What about a JO Clone Wars expansion? Again a very real possibility.

What are your thoughts? Not just on what you think it would be "cool to see", but more on what you actually think LEC will deliver...

Remember the timeframe here! All these games will have to be released over the next 3 years, probably tying in concurrently with events in the books, comics and TV series.

It would be wise, I would imagine, to utilise existing engines, rather than building games from scratch...

Great, now you got me anticipating an X-Wing/Jedi Starfighter game, and when it doesn't happen I'll kill. ;)

Seriously though, this is great news. I'd love to see a Clone Wars game with the new engines out now.

Unless George Lucas has some involvement with the general storyline running through these games, I have serious doubts that they'll mesh well with Episode III. They may cover things that'll end up being contradicted when the movie hits theaters in 2005. Not that I ever considered the video games to be part of the canon anyway.

I'm so happy they are doing this rather than waiting after ep3. As long as they take thier ques from Geroge It be ok. The new Jedi comic series looks cool.

If you read the whole article on starwars.com, it certainly seems that this is more that your run-of-the-mill EU kind of thing (no EU slight intended).

This appears to be a story arc, told through various media, specifically to carry us from Ep 2 to Ep 3. Episode 2.5 anyone?

I have the distinct feeling from reading that article and the interest it's creating in Literature that LFL have decided not to contradict themselves with the EU this time, and are actually planning it out nicely so that it doesn't interfere with anything. Anything that is published with "Clone Wars" on it will now be part of the official story arc that has been orchestrated, which is a good thing. It's only taken them ten years to figure out that the EU's messing with the films. :p

As for Larry Holland, that's the best news I've heard in quite a while. This WWII flight sim they're making could well be a spiritual sequel to Weapons of the Luftwaffe (or whatever it was called). Now that TG is back on board, I'm expecting to see a world-class Clone Wars space combat sim. And if I don't, I'm not going to be happy... :p

Yes. Very similar to SOTE in the multimedia co-ordination & story-arc angle...

But different in that there will be many, many different stories across comics, books, games & TV encompassing a significant timeline.

The immediately post-AOTC stuff coming out first, the mid-Clone War coming out in a year & a half, and the stuff detailing events just prior to Ep 3 coming out, well, just prior to Ep3.

A wonderful concept - "real time" releases I think they're describing it as. I find the whole thing extremely interesting, and wonder how the blurring of the Movie / "EU" borders will effect the purists.

I agree, jp-30 It does seem intriguing. Though I'm not sure how the purists will take it, though some might not like the idea of such a blurring together of EU and movies.

    Just "asked Lucasarts" about this. Hard to squeeze into 200 characters;

    On starwars.com;

    > Future titles are in the works with more Clone War action.

Could we see these as add on packs (JO) and utilising existing engines (Holland's WW2 Flight sim)? PC & Console?
[/blockquote]

    Wonder if they'll answer...

Back when they announced that the Republic comic series would start covering the Clone Wars, it was mentioned by a writer of that series that they have only one restriction from George Lucas to avoid conflict with Episode 3: no Padme stories. I assume this means she's gonna be pregnant by time the film starts, and they wish to keep the cirumsatnces surrounding that under wraps until the movie comes out.

Other than that, the EU has alot of free reign in the Clone Wars- for example, Obi-Wan will recieve his General title in the comics.

Also, as we get closer and closer to Episode 3, any potential rough spots will be ironed out with new material, as Lucas will undoubtably provide access to the Episode 3 script to some authors to include E3 elements into their works like he did with AOTC. SO the possibility of any EU conflicts with Episode 3 will be pretty slim- but then again, that's how it's always been ::)

There certainly is fertile ground with such a broad conflict and as such could be some amazing games, however part of the Xwing/Tie Fighter appeal was that the battles captured the imagination and really made us kids think "wow, what would it be like to be there?"

Aside from the ground battle at the end of Ep II (which may or may not have had the same effect) there hasn't been a suitable combat scene other than lightsaber duels really worthy of recreation. Just my take but hopefully the games designers can do a good job on their own at capturing the feel for what it would be like to be involved in the clone wars. I'm no longer wide eyed nine year old seeing the movies on the big screen for the first time, but I just don't see the same desire to be in control of a clone war vehicle or a Naboo fighter like there was with the AT-AT or the X-wing.

You didn't want to be part of that asteroid fight? ;)

As I've been arguing in 3NS, we need a decent space battle in this trilogy. It's the one thing we've been lacking. The Battle of Naboo was fairly lacklustre, so there's not a lot to draw from there. Of course, it is entirely feasible that they will simply create whole campaigns for a space combat sim, which would be fine by me. :D

I've been waiting for ages for LucasArts to do a follow-up project along similar lines to SotE, but never got my hopes up. This is something that is beyond what I had hoped, and if they do plan things out properly like they mainly did with SotE and for the most part the NJO, yet learn from the mistakes that were made in both those ventures, this could definitely be interesting. We'd get material that fills out the backstory of the Clone Wars, along with seeing a large portion of what happened, rather than just a few little instances of it, all in close to real-time, and depending on the consistency and areas delved into, we'd even get some hints as to what lies in store for us in Ep III.

This whole "inbetween Ep2 and Ep3" of SW seems like an awesome idea.

You are thrust into the heat of battle in the galaxy's most unforgettable conflict. Lead the Republic army in the greatest battles of the epic Clone Wars as Anakin Skywalker, Mace Windu, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Your directive: stop the Separatists from reassembling an ancient Sith weapon of mass annihilation!

thats from an add for starwars clone wars on gamecube, what could this ancient sith weapon of mass annihilation be, my thought are the death star????? but its not an ancient weapon, anyone got this game no what it is???

It's on again! Wonder if we'll see any cell-shaded games taking on the visual style of the cartoon?

I think this is a great idea having games and books and comics to cover the time period between ep2 and 3.
Could be a clever ploy to sell more books and games.
