Bad memories of tartare sauce.... I was watching an England game in the pub with some friends, it was quite a dire match and England didn't look like scoring any time soon. My mate then said if England score I dare you to eat a packet of tartare sauce, and as fools do, we all agreed. 10 seconds later England scored, cue cheers of delight then groans of dismay as we realised what was to come. It was not the most pleasant taste I've ever experienced to put it mildly!

 

You need to have it with something, it's a bit like tommie sauce. I couldn't eat that on it's own but with chips it's nice. Same with mayo actually.

Mayo > Tartare Sauce >>> Brown Sauce >>>>>> Tommie Sauce

 

Definitely mayo. I had that on sandwiches when I was growing up. I don't think we had salad cream in the US. (If we did my mom never bought it). I tried it once here and thought it was horrible.

To address the question; it depends on what it is being used for.

And to the user who suggested a blend of salad cream and tomato ketchup was good on scampi should be shot. The correct way to make Marie-Rose sauce is actually mayonnaise and tomato ketchup (together with a splash Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco etc etc)

 

It had to be changed for legal reasons. Helman's are notoriously litigious

 

USA shrimp cocktail sauce: Mayo, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and hot horseradish. MMM good..
