I have been itching for some time to try
my hand at making a costume. The only
problem is, that most people have made
and can offer advice on any number of
    character's outfits except Luke.

It seems that most people concentrate
on either Imperial figures or PT
    characters.

I would like to make a quality Luke Bespin
outfit, maybe in time for Halloween, but
for sure in time for Celebration III.
The Lightsaber and Gun are no problem
(Expensive, but no problem) It's the rest
of the costume that presents a challenge.

I have done web search after web search looking
for anyone who has made this costume, and could
offer tips on how they accomplished it, with no
    luck.

If any of you have ver made this outfit, or have
any advice on constructing it (Materials et.)
    I would appreciate it. :)

A great reference study for this costume is the Muppet Show episode that Mark Hamill appeared in, which is available on DVD. Since he's doing some very silly movement, and not being set up in every shot to look optimal like he is in Empire, you get to see how the costume moves.
There's definitely a hidden placket button closure down the front -- when he's gesticulating wildly with the Muppets, you can really see the button placement.
As far as fabric, it looks like a basic twill to me.
Really, this is a fairly easy costume in terms of sewing -- since there aren't any funky closure hardwares on the fatigues themselves (correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember ever seeing any) or anything, it's really just a matter of finding a good fabric and then futzing with a pattern until you get the details right.

One of the iterations of the Official Fan Club (Pre-Wizards/Hasbro days) use to sell a replica jacket along with a replica Han Vest.

It was made by a company named Anjon Apparel.

If you can find the jacket on eBay then all you need is the pants and a shirt.

At the very least finding more pics of the jacket will help figure out the pattern. You may also have luck looking in army surplus shops for similar military jackets.

Thanks for the advice. I will certainly check that out,
    and I agree, I think it's a twill material.

Also thanks for the jacket picture. I just became aware
of it's existence recently, but had never seen a
picture that clear. Thank you both for the effort and
    time. :)

Anyone else, feel free to add any advice you may have.
I will certainly need it, as my old home-ec teacher can
    tell you.

(Also, as I suspected, seems like this is not a real
popular costume. Has anyone ever seen anyone else
    wearing one?)

Oh yes--at Empire Fan Fest nearby in New Jersey just two weeks ago. [face_laugh] I had no idea if it was homemade or not--it looked a bit too pro, as if it were bought ready-made, but it was the exact costume in question. So don't be discouraged--at best, you'll stand out and shine! :D

I've been thinking about making a costume similar to that one except I wouldn't be Luke, I would be just a random NJO style Jedi. I was going to rig my anakin belt with a holster so I could carry a custom blaster along with my custom saber and kinda change things up a bit.

I was actually thinking of doing the same thing as well. My major fanfic character (just so happens to be the same screen name I go by here) Aramys Strael is pretty much the same thing. He's a jack-of-all-trades kind of Jedi. Like Corran Horn, he's both a professional soldier for the New Republic as well as a renowned and respected Jedi Master. Personal friends with Master Skywalker. He carries a specialized dual-bladed lightsaber that goes from saberstaff to two individual sabers. Like you mentioned, he carries a blaster pistol that he personally designed with the help of the folks at Blastech.....

So why do I mention all this? Because someday I want to produce a costume that depicts all that I have described above. Someday it will happen, someday.....

Of course it does beg the question: the Bespin/Dagobaugh fatigues we see in ESB, would they have stayed the same or would they have varied in some degree over the subsequent years that were post-ROTJ???

AramysStrael: I was looking in the "New essential
guide to characters" and the picture of Jacen Solo
shows him wearing the Bespin outfit. It looks to me
almost identicle, with maybe a few changes. I don't
follow EU, but this may serve as a guide for you.

Feezle: Did you make your saber out of a Graflex, or
is it a more PT style?

I actually got the idea from that pic of Jacen....

I got a saber machined from randomsabers....I need to weather it still but it is pretty cool. It really isn't prequel or OT style....just my style...
