So what exactly are you looking for? Do you need a list of existing sounds you can download, or do you want to create your own?

In that case, I would start with these links:

    http://dreamland-digital.com/soundbunker.html
    http://www.theforce.net/fanfilms/postproduction/soundfx/

Also, there is a great deal of information on this sort of thing in the "How To Make Lightsabers" topic near the top of the page - be sure to check it out! :)

    Good luck!

EDIT: Hmm, it would seem that they beat me to it. :p

So, you want the idle hum. Easy. Go to http://fxhome.com and go to the bar at the top of the page. You'll see:

    Chromanator Effects lab more

Put your cursor on "more" and you'll notice a load of options. At the far right of these options you'll see "sound downloads". Click it and browse away. You can get the hums (drones) but also 75 other saber sounds. Hope this helps,

    Talonias

P.S: "Effects lab" Is a really good program for making the lightsabers glow, check it out (£49.99 if you buy before June 30th).

Is it possible to mix/create your own though? I don't know how you would go about doing that if you wanted to...
What did ILM do originally? Does anyone know?

You can create your own sounds by taking some simple audio mixing tools (there are some free ones in this topic) and playing with direction, speed, and distortion effects to create your own unique sound effects.

Ben Burtt created the original sound effects for Star Wars - you can read about his work on the series here.

    Hope that helps!

I'm vaguely disappointed that some joker didn't post "I just go zzzrew-tch!-znraw into a microphone".

Well, I was gonna do the smart-alecky thing and say "hold the mic up and go 'blblbblblblbblblblblbblblWHOOSHkzzzhhhhblblblbblblblbblblblblblblb'. Now you've gone and ruined my joke! Bah.
