Sorry, if this topic has already been mentioned but I need help with getting my X-wing vs. TIE Fighter (version Win95) to work on windows XP. I installed the game on my hard drive, but when I tried to run the program it said "failed to detect CD in CD-rom drive". The cd was in the drive, so it didn't make any sense.
I looked on google for some solutions but most of them said something about turning off "flexicd", however I don't have that. I also looked in this topic here and installed everything that it said to. Then I installed the game a second time to drive /C:/program files/lucasarts/XWINGVSTIE (after uninstalling it of course). I couldn't find the "imuse.exe" file so I tried running the xwingvstie.exe program with VDMSound, but I get an error message saying "Bad command or file name".
This is a pain in my butt, I think it is worth it though. If anyone can help this girl to just get the game working I will be so grateful!!

If you would like to just send any help to my email, that's ok too. Its cain.m00@gmail.com. Thanks again!

motojeeber, you have to reload the CD and run the game from the launcher. Also, make sure the CD is in the optical drive with the lowest letter (i.e. if you have an optical drive @ D: and another one @ E:, use the D: drive).

Note: Running XvT in a DOS emulator is pointless, since XvT is a Win32 game and will not work in DOS.

Thank you! Although one of the threads I've been to, hasn't been working so far, but I'll keep trying! :D

Also Wildstar02301, thank you for the info! The cd is in the lowest letter drive, I'm still having difficulties. [face_worried]

Try this, dunno if it's a fix for the CD detection issue, but worth a crack:

Find the icon on your desktop/Start menu
Right click > Properties > Compatibility
Select "Run in compatibility mode for"
    and choose Windows 98/Windows ME

See how far that gets you.

Oh, actually that other thread isn't that helpful, since it's more about DOS games and as was said XvT is a Windows game. VDMSound won't help.

Have you installed the patch? That made some changes to the CD detection.

Ok now I'm getting annoyed. I installed the patch but then when I tried to play the game it gave me the DirectX issues. It kept asking me to install so I also clicked "run compatibility using Windows 98/ME" but then the program doesn't even open.
    *cries* :_|

Oh, it doesn't detect you have a newer version of DirectX installed?
From another forum (though this is windows 2000)
    "A: there're are several solutions:
    1) Create a shortcut to z_xvt__.exe and give it the parameter ishost, so the command line should be: z_xvt__.exe ishost
    OR
    2) Run Z_XVT__.EXE directly from the root of the XWingTie directory ( if you play BoP from the XvT/BoP directory)
    OR
    3) Copy ddhelp.exe to your c:\winnt\system32 folder - on some pc's it works, on some it doesn't."
Though you should just have to set compatibility mode to make it work. Perhaps try Windows 95 instead of Windows 98.

Running the Z_XVT_.exe directly worked! Yesss! Thank you!
