    Woah!

The new VDMsound "launchpad" interface has options for EMS / XMS, plus CD-Drive drivers and a whole host of other things (sound, obviously).

So it took me 2 minutes to get my old DOS X-Wing (Collector's edition) working in XP. Just ensure EMS memory was enabled and the generic CD-Drivers were enabled.

And then it took me 10 seconds to get TIE fighter (Collector's Edition) working (using the config file that was already working for XWING!).

I've owned TIE fighter for almost 10 years and NEVER played it. My DOS 386PC was too slow, and I've never had it working on my Windows boxes!

Install VDMsound. Then install the Launchpad Graphic Interface.

Then install your DOS Games on your Hard drive, once installed, right click the imuse.exe configurator file in your \XWING\ directory and "run with VDMsound" which will make the game think you're running a Soundblaster card and allow you to set the sound up for the game.

Then launch the game by right clicking xwing.exe, tiecd.exe or whatever, and selecting "run with VDMsound" -> choose the CUSTOM option (Important! The default setup won't install the CD drivers needed!), make sure those things I mentioned above are selected and
    make a desktop icon.

    You're in baby!

    :D

    Links;

    VDM sound 2.0.4
    VDM sound "Launchpad" graphic interface

Be careful not to install Xupiter or Gator if you get a popup box!

Woohoo! Off to configure Dark Forces now.

I found the digital sound breaking up a little in TIE, and the opening crawl / cutscene was going way too slow.

To rectify I turned off the Midi option (used adlib for the music), and also ran UVCONFIG.exe in the TIE directory and selected 8MB video memory.

    Works perfectly now!

Now if I could only get X-Wing Collector's Edition running in higher res than 320x240. :(

Oh, you all know to use SCUMMVM to run your old Lucasarts adventures in XP, right?

H.G. Wells is a girl?!

    :p

    You talking Wondergirl or Jade?

The one LEC game I can't make work properly in XP is Shadows of the Empire. The menu screens are OK, using different types of settings I can also get the movies to play fine (but slow), but the gameplay refuses to work. Probably to do with old 3DFX calls. I've tried downloading some Voodoo wrappers (eVoodoo), but no luck there either.

If anyone has problems using VDMSound / Launchpad or SCUMMVM, or the games don't run smoothly, let us know here & I'll help you tweak the settings.

I took a look at Rebel Assault 2 yesterday. I didn't actually need Launchpad, it worked OK in pure XP, though the movies ran too fast for the audio. I notice that Launchpad has options for speed capping, so I might try and get the synch right sometime. Just a pity the acting is so absolutely awful in that game. :(

I also got Shadows of the Empire sort of working - I can view all the cutscenes, which are the best part. But in game there are no enemies visible. I'll keep working on that one, though it's not something VDMSound can fix.

I guess I ought to write all this up, with screenshots and suggested settings, and have night4554 post it in the tfn/games/ section.

Perhaps this can be a "Stupid XP - help" thread. [face_plain]

I have Colin McRae Rally. Works fien of parents computer but when I put the CD into my computer back home nothing pops up on screen to install. I double click the drive through "My Computer" and still nothing. CD spins and "wirrs" but nothing happens. I tried "Explore CD" - didn't work.

Is there some way to get it to work on XP? I am almost tempted to sell the game. :(

To find the imuse file (or its equivalent) I need to know what game you are attempting to install.

when you install it, look in the directory it installed to, probably c:\TIECD\ and locate IMUSE.EXE

Right click it and "run with VDMSound" to set up the sounds for the game.

It's not that I didn't WANT to play it. In fact I own 2 versions of it, the original on Floppy with the Steele Chronicles and the Collectors Edition.

I did actually play it a bit on my flatmates PC when I was a student 7 or so years back, but never got very far.

This is the first time I've got my hardware configured to run the game at a playable framerate or not have all the Stack Overflow errors associated with incorrect EMS settings. :D

    Here's a tip for those with TIE95 and win XP;

These are the steps I took to finally get TIE95 to work under XP. BTW, don't ask me about TIE disk or TIE CD.

    1. Download the Microsoft Windows XP Application Compatibility Toolkit 2.0 from here
http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?URL=/downloads/sample.asp?url= /msdn-files/027/001/685/msdncompositedoc.xml [remove the space in the middle of the URL]
    2. Install the toolkit you just downloaded.
    3. If it's not already installed, install TIE 95.
    4. Once TIE 95 is installed, go to the directory where it was installed (default is C:\Program Files\Lucas Arts\TIE 95) Right click on TIE95.exe, and click the compatibility tab. Make sure nothing is checked there. And do the same for tiestart.exe.
    5. Now go to the location that you installed the toolkit from step one. (default is C:\Program Files\Application Compatibility Toolkit) When there, open the applications folder, and then startup QFixApp.
    6. Click on browse and select tiestart.exe (C:\Program Files\Lucas Arts\TIE 95)
    7. In the layers tab, select Win 95
    8. In the fixes tab, un check the Emulate Joystick option
    9. Click the advanced button.
    10. Click Add matching file... and select tie95.exe
    11. Expand all the options in the pane below this button (tie95) and check all of the boxes.
    12. Click the run button to test it out. (note: before you launch a mission turn off 3d support in the game)
    13. If it works, click the create fix button, and follow the instructions. If not, try selecting WIN 98 in the layers tab
    14. You should know be able to launch the game by clicking on the icon.

Note that this only works for TIE 95. If you have TIE disk or TIE CD, use VDMsound & launchpad as discussed earlier in this thead.
