Just out of interest when do Jedi knights become jedi Masters. Is it when they start training their first padawan? Or is it when they have successfully completed training their first padawan? If the latter is the case, then qui-gon was not a master when he began training Obi-Wan as he had not finished training Xanatos.

In the NJO it's when Luke says they're masters.

That may be the case for the NJO series but what about in the Old Republic = pre phantom menace era?

I had always heard after their first padawan becomes a jedi; however, even when OB1 started training Anakin Anakin had to call OB1 master even though kenobi had just made knight himself

In the Old Republic, one attained the rank of Jedi Master upon training a Padawan to Knight status.

Even though Obi-Wan was still technically a Jedi Knight in AOTC, Anakin still called him 'Master" because that's what he is: Anakin's master.

In the NJO, it's when your husband is a Jedi Master and bestows the title on you because you are fatally ill, and he pities you. Esp. if you have red-gold hair.

In the NJO all the Jedi Masters have had there rank given to them by their peers; Kyp, Mara etc. However, Luke as far as I know has never been elevated to that level, but assumed the rank.

In HTTE he thinks that this is a pretty conceited thing to do, and yet does that, less than two years later.

Well it's not exactly as if there were another Master out there to bestow the rank on him.

The Knight applicant is tested and must endure trials. Such is mentioned in The Phantom Menace. When Qui-Gon tells the Council that there is no more he can teach Kenobi, the latter says, "I am ready." And somewhere in that scene, trials are mentioned. :)

That's the test to go from Padawan to Knight, not from Knight to Master.

"That's the test to go from Padawan to Knight, not from Knight to Master."

Yes, the movie suggests that. However, it's possible that they also test Knights before promoting them to Masters.

But, Obi-Wan was only a Knight when he was given Anakin as an appprentice...

That doesn't matter. Ki was only a Knight when he was put on the Jedi Council, and when he took A'Sharad as his Padawan.

So we've obviously determined that taking an apprentice doesn't raise a Knight to the level of Master. :)

No, but that's where a lot of people get confused.

A Knight takes a Padawan. The Padawan refers to him as "master," so some people think that means he's a Jedi Master. He's not, necessarily, just that particular Padawan's master.

But....in the trailer Padme says: "Master Kenobi, it's been far too long."

I don't know whether or not Obi-Wan is a master. But what else would she call him. "Knight Kenobi, it's been..." just doesn't have the same ring...

I assumed that would have been obvious. :)

Perhaps a Knight is promoted to the status of Master when the Jedi Council deems him/her worthy of the title...?
And, mayhap the Knight shows his/her worthiness by remaining loyal to the Jedi Code and regulations. But that would contradict Qui-Gon Jinn's status as a Master. He was a maverick, but still a Master.

Xanatos was a failure, so Qui-Gon obviously never successfully completed training a Padawan. He died before Obi-Wan was declared a Knight. Does that mean that Qui-Gon wasn't a master?

I doubt it. My guess is that becoming a Master has nothing to do with having trained a Padawan and everything to do with...Mastery of the Force. I mean, is a Master Blacksmith not really a master until he's trained an apprentice? No, he's considered a Master because of his talent.

    AOTC Novelization spoiler...?

I just started the book today, and, if I recall correctly, the text says that Kenobi is a Knight. Anakin and Padme refer to him as "Master" out of respect. :)

I always thought that part of it was overcoming a personal trial of some sort, like overcoming the dark side. Obi-Wan became a Knight when he defeated Darth Maul in the wake of his master's death. Luke became a Knight after facing Darth Vader with the knowledge that he was his father. Luke became a Master when he became the Emperor's apprentice and still returned to the Light. I just think that the trial isn't something set in stone, like an obstacle course or something, I think it's just any kind of opposition within yourself that you're able to overcome.

The trial is different for everyone. For Darsha, it was to get that Black Sun guy to safety.

Qui-Gon had two Padawans prior to Obi-Wan, and one was successfully trained. Therefore, Qui-Gon was already a Master when he took on Obi-Wan.

Taking a Padawan doesn't make one a Master; training said Padawan to Knighthood is how it is done.
