Hey guys. I bought the Star Wars Trilogy last night on DVD. I was wondering how I could rip some video from the DVD so that I can add effects and edit it. I'm thinking about making a fan trailer for Episode III. I want to use the blue/greenscreen footage from "Return of Darth Vader"

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Give Smart-Ripper a go. It rips DVD's straight to VOB files but they tend to be big ass files...luckily you can chose which segmants you wanna rip. Try google search for the program or on kazaa.

But then you'll have to find a way to convert the VOBs.

I've always been a fan of DVD X Copy for my backups. Costs about $100, but it's worth it.

    DVD Shrink

Google that. Best program I've used thus far.

Humm, will any of those programs allow me to rip to AVI though? Because I want to change the VOB files to AVI or Quicktime for adding visual effects and editing. Will these programs do that? I don't want to make backup copies of them.

Smart Ripper -> DVD2AVI -> TMPGEnc is what you need. Not that I'd know anything about that of course..

I'd recommend this site or this site for further details.

DVD Decrypter in my opinion is the best way to go. Then as somebody just mentioned, you can use some other things like TMPEGEnc or whatever to make it readable as an avi.

You can find DVD Decrypter, along with other usefull software at http://www.afterdawn.com and http://www.videohelp.com

use smart ripper and convert the vob to an avi with virtual dub. thats what i use. the rip itself only takes about 20 mins per movie and leaves you with vob files totaling around 3-4gb. virtual dub then can convert the vob to an avi but it takes about 3 hours per gb of vob file.

Yes use Smartripper and Virtual Dub. You only need to rip selected chapter containing the scenes you like which should take less than a minute.
Open the ripped files in VD and cut out unwanted material. Then just save it as an avi and do what ever you want with it. Doesn´t take longer than five minutes if you know what you´re doing.
There´re some nice tutorials out there that´ll help you.

Thanks guys you've been a great help. I just hope I can key these bluescreen shots from episode III. I really want to make a fan trailer, so I got to be able to key this stuff. I'll post results later.

I´ve also ripped off all duel footage but it is difficult to key due to the mpeg compression. I´m using the standard AE PB keying effects but I don´t manage it do remove the hard edges. I wish I could afford DV Matte Pro right now but there´re other important programs on my wishlist.
    Good luck though, Pixel!

I have been working with the leaked footage for months and even DvMatte Pro has struggled. I look forward to using the high rez stuff though.

I really need to try Primatte, I have seen some stunning keys with it.

Hey guys. I've got a problem. I exported the Star Wars duel footage from Return of Darth Vader. However, when I play the VOB file in Virtual Dub, the footage looks like it is sped up. But ONLY during the duel shots. From when the guy starts painting the vader helment, all the way until he takes the latex off to revel the black vader helment.

Of course, all of the duel footage is in this time frame. What's happening? Do you guys have footage that looks sped up, or is it ok? Should I use a different program than smart ripper?

Hey guys. I've been trying to get the video to look right for the past two hours. Are there other programs besides SmartRipper and Virtual Dub that I can use?

After reading your problem I am kind of confused. Since the helmet making clips were sped up to begin with, and the duel clips realtime, I assume everything is now faster? You said ONLY the duel clips...but I assume that whole sequence is now even faster?
