How do I use Adobe After Effects to make lightsabers, lightning, force, etc.?

I have Adobe After Effects and I need to make:

Glowing Lightsabers

Using the force to push, pull, choke, etc.

Using the lightning dark side of the force

Can I do this and how?

How glad are the people who somehow happen to get their hands on Adobe After Effects without having a clue of what to do with it.
