Yes, they were humanoids, they had faces. Its just their tradition, culture and ritual to cover their entire bodies.

The Tuskens would remove their masks and eat or drink. Most Tuskens were human underneath. Very few, if any, were non human or humanoid.

    Overview from,
    The Essential Guide to Characters:

Tusken Raiders, less formally referred to as Sand People or simply as Tuskens, were a culture of nomadic sapients indigenous to Tatooine. They were related to Jawas.

There are, of course, a number of means by which Human groups could have been introduced and absorbed into an initial nonhuman population: Sand People are known to have adopted settler orphans after raids on Human settlements and convoys, much like Mandalorians and some outlanders, like the Jedi Master Sharad Hett, could win a place in their tribes by virtue of their warrior prowess; nor can the possibility that earlier colonists may have been forced to adopt the Tusken lifestyle to survive be overlooked. However, it is a singular fact that there is not one Tusken Raider of whom it can be said with certainty that they were not Human.

Tatooine is said to have once been a lovely, lush world with extensive oceans, home to a civilization known as the Kumumgah, until drastic climatic change reduced the planet to desert and split the native inhabitants into two groups: the larger Ghorfas and the diminutive, scavenging Jawas. Some geological formations identified as products of this ecological change, such as Beggar's Canyon, are dated to as early as 2,000,000 BBY, but stories also persist that the Kumumgah defied the Infinite Empire some time between 50,000 and 25,000 BBY, and were punished by orbital bombardment, which slagged the surface of Tatooine into little more than fused glass; this crumbled over the subsequent tens of thousands of years, and became desert sand. However, while the intervention of the Infinite Empire is believed to have provoked major ecological transformations on other worlds, as on Kashyyyk, it is not entirely clear whether the dramatic, species-wide divergence between the tall warrior Tuskens and the diminutive enterprising Jawas can have been accomplished in a matter of just a few tens of thousands of years.

I'm guessing they eat the mushroom spores, seeing as they captured shmi for picking them. Unless there just like a clan that capture humans for torture?!

As for how, everyones already answered this. They take off the wrap, just to be represented as a Tusken when not eating and drinking they sport the wrap.

Their mask mouth piece allows them to simply puree all of their food into a fine slushy mix before neatly sucking it down.

    "Shhlurrrrrrrp -- Ahhhh!"

Tusken's are alleged to look like this under their binding and leather sphincter-like mouth - indeed, very 'wolf-like:'

    QUESTION: "How do tuskens eat?"

    [face_thinking]

    "Hmmmm... I'm not quite sure.
But I'm possitive that this will make them puke:"

Is that a lightsaber in his black thong, or is he just really happy he's become powerful?

Here's a scan I made from my copy of The Illustrated Star Wars Universe, illustrated by Ralph McQuarrie, the text by Kevin J. Anderson. You can see one of the Tusken's umasked around the campfire.

Doh! It is not the leather phincter-like mouth that makes the Tuskens' appear more 'wolf-like,' but what they look like behind the sphincter !!!! (Don't even go there [face_shame_on_you] )

And Arawn_Fenn, the image I posted above came from a SW Tusken Raiders thread HERE (at the bottom of the page), an unofficial post by a blogger who claims the pic on the 'left' is from a screenshot of a 'Grave Tusken' while the drawing on the right is the blogger's own personal rendering based upon that screen shot.

I lol'd at the "butt lips"

I always thought the metal piece on their mouth comes off and they eat food like a vacuum.

The unmasked Tusken looks like the unused design for Chewbacca.
