This has been discussed recently in the FanFilms social thread, and it surprised me that quite a lot of people seemed to pronounce it 'ay-tee-ay-tee' as I have always said the word "at" twice. I have no idea why I pronounce it like that

So how do you pronounce it, and why? Where did you get your pronunciation from? Has Lucas ever said how it's pronouced?

I don't recall if Lucas/Lucasfilm has ever stated how it should be said, but it makes sense to prounounce it by the letters, since they are each standing for a full word. Plus, if its "at" twice, how do you say AT-ST or any of the others (in EU, AT-PT, MT-AT, from the prequels, AAT, MTT, etc). It doesn't make sense to me to say one so differently from how the others have to be.

    EDIT: grammar

I say Ay-Tee-Ay-Tee, but I know that in Galactic Battlegrounds it was pronounced saying "at" twice.

But acronyms are usually pronounced as words (if they can be) as opposed to letters.

After all, in ANH, they say "turbo-laser", rather than "turbo-El-Ay-Ess-EE-Arr" :p

Other. I pronounce it "imperial walkers". :p

OK, I go with the at-at two-syllable style for the acronym AT-AT.

Certain acronyms, yes, are pronounced as words - but doing so with AT-AT given that such is impossible for so many of its predecessors/similar vehicles (particularly AT-ST, as mentioned above) just doesn't make sense to me. The vast majority of acronyms in our own world are spelled, not pronounced.

Only because, like AT-ST, they cannot be spoken as a word. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any "word acronyms" that are spelled out (Radar, laser, scuba etc). When they CAN be spoken as word, they are.

AT-AT. Not "80-80". But now "80-80" sounds right now more that I think about it because of GL's number/word thing he does (Artoo, Threepio, Obi-Wan, etc.)

at-at. By nature, we are inclined to condense words, and at-at is only two syllables, while aye tee aye tee is four. Why say four syllables when two will suffice? Aye Tee Aye Tee is the designation, if you were being technical, and considered it only as an acronym for All-Terrain Attack Transport, on paper, its an aye tee aye tee. But, if you are speaking it, I would pronounce it at-at. Its just easier.

At-At sounds dumb. Aytee-Aytee sounds better, and smarter.

    I disagree. ?At-At? sounds fine to me. Aytee-Aytee sounds like ?80 80?.

By the same logic, See-Threepio and Artoo-Detoo sound like C-3PO and R2-D2.... oh, wait.

I know "at-at" is sort of accepted in the fan circle but I always thought it was really dumb. I mean what do you guys call the AT-ST? "ay-tee-ay-tee" sounds more like how a crushing mechanical military giant would be called in real life, its hard and technical, "at-at" is way too soft sounding.

Since AT-AT or AT-ST are never said in the movies it?s impossible to be sure how to pronounce them. However, ?TIE? fighter is pronounced ?Tie? not ?T-I-E?.

There are some abbreviations that can be pronounced as they are spelled like ?TIE? and ?AT-AT? and others that can?t like ?AT-ST?.

I pronounce it Ay-Tee Ay-Tee. It's largely because that's more consistent with the AT-STs, though I usually call those Chicken Walkers.

I say AT-AT and all similarily named vehicles are initialisms, not alphabetisms :-B

Lucas and the guys at ILM (pronounced eye ell em, LOL) frequently refer to them as Chicken Walkers in Empire of Dreams as well...

But, I think calling them AT-ATs, and not 8080s, makes more sense, since as a previous poster pointed out, we don't call TIE Fighters Tee eye eee Fighters but rather ties...

but that's because they resemble ties
    Walkers don't resemble prepositions

Well I think theres equal arguments on both sides. Most names that are abbreviations or numbers are pronounced as numbers and letter, not words, but there are also exceptions like TIE fighter. I honestly think it just comes down to aesthetic--"Tye" fighter has a sort of sharp, appropriate sound to it, and Lucas came up with the name "Tye fighter" without any idea what the letter were for, whereas the AT-AT we have no clue, and like I said "ay-tee-ay-tee" is appropriately hard and technical, whereas "at-at" produces this very awkward and soft vocal rythm that just strikes me as inappopriate for these terrifying mechanical giants. I don't think we'll ever know what was actually intended. All the more reason to just call them "Imperial Walkers" like the movie does.

Just remembered that they pronounced it "At-At" in Rogue Leader, but that could have just been combat shortspeak.
