This definitely goes under the category of Star Wars minutiae.

Many names of characters, places, and things are pronounced more than one way by characters in the Saga, or people often choose to pronounce certain names different from how they are said in the films. So the question here is -- how do you pronounce the following names?

Please select one from each pair.

I've wondered about this for some EU names as well (yes, I know this is technically the Saga area of the forums), and in several cases I'd come up with mental pronunciations of names that that I later found out were totally wrong: for example, the names of the KOTOR characters Revan (Re-VAHN in my head, but it turns out it just rhymes with Evan) and Bastila (Ba-STEE-la in my head, but BASS-ti-la in the game). Anyone else done that?

I say Tyranus like neither of the above choices. The TY is "tier" for me

In the course of the saga, plus CW, I'm pretty sure I've heard all of these except for PalpaTINE. PalpaTEEN is the only way to pronounce it. Another one you might want to add is AMI-dala or AMA-dala

Tatooine also has one minor variation
In TESB, Luke pronounces it with an "ah" sound, yet everywhere else, it's like the A in "air"

Another is Qui-Gon. There's the way it's said in the movies, then there's how some people, notably Nick Gillard say it ("Kwee-Gon")

The Han thing has always baffled me though
Throughout all of ANH and ROTJ, and the first two thirds or so of TESB, it's pronounced with an "ah" sound, yet around that part of TESB, it's suddenly that A in "air" sound. I think George prefers the latter, if I'm not mistaken

I recall Ian McDiarmid giving an interview in Star Wars Insider back around when Episode I came out. He talked about how he and GL had discussed the proper pronunciation of Palpatine's name on the set of ROTJ, and actually recalled that back then they came down on "Palpa-tyne" (as opposed to "Palpa-teen" as heard in the prequels).

Actually, I think McDiarmid's memory here may be influenced by his accent. British English speakers tend to pronounce proper names ending in "-ine" with a long I, whereas Americans tend to use a long E sound instead. The same thing happened with John Constantine from the Hellblazer comic: on the page, he was a Brit who pronounced his name "Constan-tyne," but in the movie adaptation with Keanu Reeves, the name was said "Constan-teen."

Crap, I just realized I voted for the wrong Coruscant. I say it with a silent second C, accidentally voted pronounced >_<

I made the same mistake with Bastilla's name. Actually, I still forget the right pronunciation. Also, half the time I would screw up Revan's name too, but my mistake was that I would pronounce his name as "Raven" -- duh! I think I kept making that mistake because I played KOTOR as a female character and because I think Revan is a dumb name.

I voted wrong too, and I made the poll!:( I meant to vote for OrGANa rhyming with can and I voted it rhyming with con. Hopefully someone later in the thread will see that we've voted wrong and switch their votes to compensate for our mistakes! We don't want things to end up like the Bush-Gore election!:p

    I pronounce 'em this-a-way:

Han pron. Hain (rhymes with 'pain')
    Palpatine pron. Pal-Puh-Teenee
    Coruscant pron. Coh-Ruh-Scaint
    Organa pron. Or-Gay-Nay
    Tyranus pron. Tee-Ray-Noos

    Doesn't everyone . . .?

And they're pronounced different ways throughout
Sometimes it simply depends on your accent, other time it seems completely random (IE switching between pronunciation of Han in TESB)

    Tarkin also said LEE-ah. :D

I think it's down to accent and perception of proper pronunciation which varies by region.

In some interviews GL pronounces the name Han as if it would rhyme with the word main.

Yeah, in the recent featurette on TCM, GL always pronounced "Han" to rhyme with "Dan," the way Billy Dee Williams does in the movies.

That "Han"-rhymes-with-"ran" trend on Cloud City always puzzles me. Harrison and I say "Hawn."

Wait! There are SW featurettes playing in Turner Classic Movies?!

... ARGH. In the midst of careful pronunciation, a typo. I did mean "Hahn." (Sleep-deprived post was sleep deprived. Audibly.)

TCM did indeed run a featurette starring GL a week or so ago. It wasn't solely dedicated to SW, mind you--a lot of it focused instead on the topic of fantasy films in general. Afterward, the channel showed several of the films that had been mentioned by name in the featurette.

    "Hayne"? Really? That's just obnoxious.
    Alderaaahhhn.
I feel lik this pronunciation (at least within the context of this film) was mainly based off of the accent and culture of the actors.

I have a T-shirt that shows Luke and Leia with the caption "Looking for love in Alderaan places," which seems to bear this pronunciation out. :D
