I was having this debate with a friend and thought I would ask it here. How do you say these Star Wars words?
Do you call it a A-T, A-T (Spelling out the letters) do you say AT AT? It seems that people I have asked , the older ones, like over 38 can grow up with "Empire" says AT AT and younger people spell it out.

Do you say 4-LOM or 4-L O M and spell it out? Now I never heard ANYONE spell out L O M but on a old kenner commercial that kid says "the new 4 L O M figure" and now that 4-LOM is a droid and you spell out the letters in a droids name it makes sense to say L O M and not LOM.

Everyone seems to say HAN as HON but Lucas, says HAND so that makes one thing that he name is HAND. After all Lucas came up with the name. So does anyone here say HAND?

Ironically, I'm one who says AT-AT as the four letters, 4-LOM as if "lom" is a sound, and Han as in the han in "hand".
It's all subjective, really. Pretty sure either pronunciation is ok. Tomayto tomahto

The only time in the movies when the "a" in "Han" is pronounced like "hand" is on Cloud City in ESB. I think Billy Dee Williams was saying it wrong and no one had the heart to correct him, so they just played along. ;-)

its gotta be A-T-A-T otherwise how could you say AT-ST?

I also say 'lom', but that one go either way.

saying A-T A-T just doesn't sound right (to me). You spell out AT-ST cause ST isn't a word. Also I don't recall called it a AT-ST anyway, I call it a Scout Walker

    1) Simply each letter for A-T-A-T

    2) I say "Four Lom"

    3) Always said "Han" (like "ham") - I figured people were saying "Han" but accentuated with a slightly "posh" accent, elongating the a, to sound like o.

    Haaaan.

I "grew up with Empire", and I always said (and heard) "at-at", though I do remember questioning that on the basis of AT-ST.

4-lahm (I'm American). Never spelled out by letter. But that was back when 4-LOM was Zuckuss, and thus not a droid. Though I do remember wondering if he was part cybernetic...

As for Han, I'm reminded of how British and American dialects have different renderings of the more centralized "a" sound found in other languages. For example, Brits tend to render the Italian word "pasta" as "past-a" with the vowel found in "cat", whereas Americans usually have "pah-sta", with the broader vowel of "father". If I'm not mistaken, Guinness does this with "Chewbacca", pronouncing it with the vowel of "cat" or "back". Also (Ithink) in Cushing's pronunciation of "Alderaan". So perhaps "Han" is supposed to have a vowel somewhere between the two extremes, and the various characters/ actors are mapping the sound onto their own dialect's equivalent. I think Leia has a more central a in "Han". Now I need to go check how the various actors/ characters do pronounce it... [face_thinking]

Why Billy Dee, as an American, pronounces it like "han(d)" has always mystified me.

This reminds me of something I brought up a while ago on another fan forum for Duran Duran; seemingly simple words but the fact dialects can play a big part in how to pronounce words:

    DER-RAN DER-RAN

    or

    JU-RAN JU-RAN

    or

    D-RAN D-RAN

    ....sorry... :-B

    AT-AT as in (a-tat)

never heard of 4-LOM so wouldn't know

Han as Han (like hand) although Hah-n sounds more alien like

but I also say Palpatine as Palp-a-tyne not Palp-a-teen

simply because I read an article before TPM came out in Star Wars Magaizine uk where McDiarmid was asked this very question and he said "in the end George and I decided on Palp-a-tine" so it stuck.

As for the logic of "how can it be a-tat when you can't do the same with AT-ST?" I suppose just because we can't make a word from LM*O we can't say A-sap for A.S.A.P :p
