How Long Does it Take to Get Used to Diet Coke?

I just had one, bad aftertaste! How long it take to get used to them?

I dunno, how long did it take to get used to the bad aftertaste of regular Coke?

 

Diet Coke is foul.

Why would anyone drink Diet Coke? Regular Coke is much better for you and tastes better.

If you're like many people, including myself, that's genetically predisposed to be hypersensitive to the taste of aspartame (or however you spell it), then probably never. It'll always give you that disgusting aftertaste. (I remember we did a lab on it in high school to see which students carried the trait or not.)

I know some people so sensitive to the stuff, they can literally smell the difference between regular drinks and those with the artificial sweetener.

 

^^ I can do that, is that not normal? The smell is quite different.

My mom used to live on Coke till she was diagnosed with diabetes, and had to go to Diet drinks, and she prefers Diet Dr Pepper over Diet Coke.

I don't know how long til I got used to Diet Coke, but now I don't gag after drinking it.

Well, if you don't like it to begin with, why would you want to get used to it?

 

I like Code Red Mountain Dew. I never drink diet - it always has a bad aftertaste to me, too.

 

Can't everybody? The difference in taste and smell is totally obvious.

Well, the smell is probably bad enough that anyone can pick it out.

But supposedly the hypersensitivity is a recessive trait, IIRC. So one quarter of the population would be affected by it, if I'm remembering my basic genetics correctly. Also depends on what you consider the definition of "normal" to be.



Not everybody. When we did that test in school using little test strips that you place against your tongue...most of the class couldn't taste it at all while the rest had a very quick reaction to a nasty, bitter taste. Kinda like how some people have "hitchhicker's thumbs" while everyone else have more normally bending thumbs.

If I have to have one, I'll choose Diet Pepsi.

 

Wow, I didn't know that a bitter dislike to aspertame was genetic. I hated it when all the gums went away from sugar to aspertame. Maybe this new splenda stuff won't be so bad once they start making soft drinks out of it.

 

To me, Diet and regular tastes exactly the same.

Now Mountain Dew is a whole different case

I don't know. Depends on the person I guess. You may be the type that would never like them. it all depends.
