I don't know if this has been discussed before, but if it is direct me to the thread.

On Mustafar when Padme rejoined Anakin, and was totally unaware that Obi-Wan had hitched a ride to Mustafar in her ship, how long was he standing there listening to them talk? Do you think he heard everything Anakin said, about the Jedi turning against him, about them ruling the galaxy, about him being more powerful than the Chancellor, about Obi-Wan trying to turn Padme against him, about his new powers being the only thing that could save Padme, etc.

We know Obi-Wan couldn't have heard everything or did he?

Long enough. Probably gave her two minutes to get out of the ship, after they landed.

I think part of the point was is that he may have showed himself too early even. Anakin was still battaling with his emotions over Padme until he saw Obi Wan, and then his anger took control.

Yes, why wasn't this addressed in the movie? Another gaping plot-hole courtesy of George.

hmmm...good point. do you think it would have better if we didnt see him get on the ship and only knew he was there when he told anakin to let her go?

I don't think it was a plot hole at all. We are viewing the scene out of Anakin's eyes, because we don't know Obi-Wan is there until Anakin finds out.

Nah, he showed himself at the right time. Padme was not getting anywhere with Anakin. he did'nt want to hear about ObiWan.they turned on him. ;) he was past that.

I have to disagree here, I don't think we will ever know if Padme was getting through, because Obi-Wan appeared while she was still talking.

    Padme:
    "You're going down a path I can't follow."
    Anakin:
    "Because of Obi-Wan?"
    Padme:
"Because of what you've done. What you plan to do!"
*Anakin sees Obi-Wan standing at the ship entrance. Anakin looks pissed.*
    Padme continues, unaware:
"Stop! Stop now, come back... I love you!"
    Anakin:
    "Liar!"

She wouldn't have been able to convince him that the Jedi were good, but I think there was still hope that he would leave with her if Obi-Wan had never appeared.

I agree, Anakin wouldnt gotten angry and called her a liar if he didnt see ObiWan. Sure Padme wasnt getting anywhere but ObiWan showing up made things alot worse then they were previously

Especially the way he had that whole Superman pose going....

Yes, in that pose, there was something in Kenobi's body language. It looked confrontational, in fact, which only caused Anakin to become even angrier. Obi-Wan wasn't just standing there looking calm. He was there to kill Skywalker and Anakin interpreted as such.

But getting back to the topic. The dialouge between Senator Amidala and Anakin didn't last that long so I think either Obi-Wan came from out of the compartment after he heard Padme walk by him, or once he knew she was off the ship he headed towards the cockpit to get a view then went to the boarding ramp to focus on them.

The Superman pose was splendid. I busted out laughing when I first saw it. Obi-Wan was the new sheriff in town, he had that "Alright son, daddys here to take you to the woodshed, you've been naughty" look.

Anakin acted completely scorned like a child caught with his hand in the jar. Damn that movie is good.

I think Obi-wan might have just appeared when Anakin saw him...I mean Anakin was facing the ship so out of the corner of his eye he should have been Obi-wan when he came out...at least I think so.

"Love won't save you Padme, only my new powers can"

Anakin was far too gone to ever come with Padme; and Padme was far too pure to ever allow such an Anakin to come with her and her child. Nor would she take a man who couldn't see what was wrong with slaughtering innocent Younglings and Jedi; and who had aspirations to rule the galaxy.

    They WERE going nowhere.

Long enough to realize that his apprentice was truly treading on thin ice and that he was likely a goner to the darkside.

He was probably there long enough to hear most of the conversation. He should have stayed out of sight a bit longer than he did, even though it probably wouldn't have made much difference either way.

obi wan wasn't there to gather information, or turn his friend back from the darkness. he was there to destroy the sith. even if he heard nothing his mission was clear. it doesn't matter how long he was there or what he heard.

timing is everything here....if obiwan would have waited longer it may have changed what happened but actually could have made it even worse:
anakin has already turned; can he be brought back just with padme's words? if she continued to refuse to travel down that same path, would he have just let her go ....with obiwan?? that force choke may have been even more forcefully applied. the question becomes - was padme convincing him that he was still "a good person" and didn't "have to do this".

and i too loved that superman stance but it sure provoked anakin - yet another lecture forthcoming. in the duel anakin was the aggressor but here he is really defensive because he knows...he knows guilt - there must be another pathway to take. but he doesn't see another choice. palaptine ensured that. and obiwan is standing there reminding anakin of what is light, what is right, what is good.

"but I think there was still hope that he would leave with her if Obi-Wan had never appeared."

Would have never happened. He was capable of turning back with her,
but there's no way he would have given up the power and control he
thought he could gain. He made his choice and offered Padme part of
it [rule at his side], but there's no way he would have given it up
for her at that point, with or without seeing Obi-Wan.

i guess it boils down to what obi-wan wanted to accomplish with his, um, visit. yoda says they got to destroy the sith and that's what he's there for, so it doesn't really matter how he appears to anakin. i'd argue he wants to make the strongest impression possible so anakin won't get crazy ideas of reconciliation or anything like that.

I don't think Obi-Wan actually came to kill Anakin, he tried to reason with him at first.

Obi-Wan did go to Mustafar with the intention of killing Anakin. There may have been one small part of him that thought the influence of Padme could persuade Anakin to stand down at which point Obi-Wan's intention may have shifted to arresting Anakin.

I think he may have told himself that, but when he got there he still tried to talk with him. Of course, when the time came, he knew he couldn't.
