I've been arguing about this, but I'm not sure about anything yet. The Council sent two hundred Jedi to Geonosis, and most of them were killed. Were they the only Jedi left in the galaxy? How many more were there, other than the Council itself? If there are only a dozen or so Jedi left, then there wouldn't be any need for Palpatine to turn public support against them, or to use his clone army. He could pretty much just get Anakin (most likely his apprentice by this point) to take them on himself.

I'm not sure, but it's been said that there are 10 000 jedi apart from the ones who went to Geonosis. I'll bet the opening crawl of Episode 3 will say that the Jedi have suffered enormous casualties, but the exact number won't be shown... by the end of the movie all the council members will be dead - and we'll only know of Obi-Wan and Yoda surviving. The post-Ep 3 Pre-Ep 4 EU novels will probably deal with Vader killing the rest of the Jedi.

When you think about it, 10 000 Jedi is not a huge number. Two hundred die in one battle in a very localized place, 3 years later, after many battles, its not farfetched to think that thousands will be killed. If only 9000 Jedi die, that is still a remarkable casualty rate after 3 years of immense warfare. I say they will be down by their last 1000 by episode 3, and during the movie most of which, if not all of which will die. I still think it is not unreasonable to have Vader slaughter them all in Episode 3.

If there are only 20-100 more or so by the second half of the film, The Purge could easily begin and nearly be finished.

Keep in mind there's about a 20 year gap between Episode III and ANH. I'd say that there'd still be a few Jedi surviving after Episode III (I'm sure the start of this purge will be then, and won't be complete until Darth Vader finishes off Obi-Wan).

There were supposedly 10,000 Jedi during TPM. That number would have substantially decreased by AotC

Why would the number decrease between TPM and AotC? The Jedi weren't actually engaged in battles with separatist armies before the events of AotC, and the Chancellor wouldn't have been able to stop the Jedi from training as many new padawans as they always did during those ten years. I figured there were still ~10000 Jedi during AotC, but most were occupied with other assignments and couldn't be called back in time to go to Geonosis. That's why Mace implied he was scraping together as many Jedi as he could find on Coruscant at the time.

According to the Visual Dictionaries there were 10,000 Jedi galaxy-wide in TPM. By AotC, the Visual Dictionary states there are 9,000. So despite there not being a war, the Jedi lost 1,000 members in that ten-year period. By the beginning of Ep. 3, I'm sure that 9,000 will have decreased even further, by a couple thousand perhaps. By the end, the number would shrink even more.

But I do agree that at the end of Ep. 3, there will be more than just Obi-Wan and Yoda around. Those two will be the final two, yes, but considering the 18 years between Ep. 3 and ANH, I would think the purge would be completed in that time period, not completely in Ep. 3 itself.

I'm guessing not many; 1,000 or quite possibly less. I doubt we're going to see much, if any of the Jedi purge though; I think like the tusken slaughter, that's something that's going to take place mostly behind doors.

Thanks guys. I'll just go and use these arguments against my friend. :p

BTW, the OS says that a substantial number of Jedi were killed while trying to maintain the peace shortly before the Clone Wars begun. The Separatists were making life difficult before the Battle of Geonosis, and the Jedi were supposedly pushed to the limit trying to maintain order. That would be where the 1000 or so were killed in the ten years between TPM and AOTC, I would assume.

I think that there will be at least 5,000 jedi by the begining of ep3

By the start of Episode III we know the because of the Clone Wars and the Jedi's involvement, the number of Jedi would have dwindled giganticly. I would say that in two years probably thousands of Jedi would have died in battle. By the time of Anakin's turn to the Sith ways, the Jedi Purge will come about and the number will be subtracted. But by the end of Episode III, maybe just very few besides Obi-Wan and Yoda. I would personally like to see the Jedi Purge or glimpes of it since it's been talked about for such a long time. I remember reading ANH novel and Obi-Wan told LukeWith the Jedi destroyed, disorganized, or dead there were very few to oppose Vader. This novelization was written by GL himself. So I would suggest that there will be quite a few Jedi left but they will be decimated and their ability to use the Force very limited....

But I'm suggesting possibly around a thousand or so Jedi by the beginning of the final SW episode. That way, around 8500 or 9,000 Jedi would have been eliminated leaving the Empire to finish it off...

This novelization was written by GL himself.

I believe GL had a ghost writer for it (Alan Dean Foster?) and, thus, didn't actually write it himself

I apologize for my earlier post, it's not exactly what the author had in mind. I'd say that there'd be a few thousand (no more than 6,000 or so) left, but it'll continually shrink until ANH.
