    Go to video rental place.

Pick up Star Wars Episodes 1 or 2.

    Watch spins.

    Emulate.

Or, better yet, don't spin at all and don't fill your choreography with pointless flourishes, or at the very least, use them sparingly.

There's this one and one that Mae made and posted on here although that link has expired, but someone will have the file.

Hope that helps. It's also good just to get a good sized pole or whatever works and try and twirl it yourself and come up with whatever new flourishes and tricks you can.

I'm sorry, but this thread makes me laugh!

    [face_laugh] [face_laugh] [face_laugh]

I mean really... This is like saying, "Can someone please make me a tutorial on how to walk?" without actually trying to walk first.

Ryan had one for the Staff, which may be applicable in some cases.-

I forget if it was Ryan or Dorkman (maybe both) who said they picked up on a lot just by watching movies.
I know Ryan took fencing cause he mentioned it somewhere..

But yeah, I haven't had a single class and I think I'm doing alright. I haven't released my new fight, but those have seen it tell me there's definite improvement.

It's like anything else. Just practice. That's the only way to get better.

Having a lightweight prop helps too.

Tasapaino - Welcome to TFN! You might want to look up some swordplay books on Amazon in addition to what has already been mentioned. However the best thing is to just go out and try new methods and ideas and see what works best for you.

    Good luck!

Could someone explain to me what this guy means by "spinning" a lightsaber? Is he talking about rotating it(like, rotoscoping)?

Where's the confusion? He means spinning it. Like picking it up and spinning it around. How do you get rotoscoping out of that?

You guys are dicks. Durb, that was rude, man.

Taspaino, it's all in the wrist. Hold the stick/dowel/saber in the crotch of your thumb of your right hand, support it there...rest your other fingers on it lightly if you want, but the pivot should be between your thumb and the base of your forefinger. Then you have a lot more access to let the handle spin, by laying your hand over, and flicking it back and bringing your hand back around.

Just go out and play with a broom handle for an hour, you'll get the hang of it easily enough.

I'm with Durb on this one.

Seriously, just pick up a stick and play with it. That's about all there is to it. You figure stuff out.

I forget if it was Ryan or Dorkman (maybe both) who said they picked up on a lot just by watching movies.

Both. At the time of RvD neither of us had any formal training of any kind. I took a quarter of basic fencing in college... I definitely wouldn't say it helped my saber skills, though. Had to un-learn a lot of lightsaber style to avoid getting points deducted and such. Practice in your back yard with a stick and watch swordfight movies. It'll get you started.

Gimme a break, Fig. I wasn't trying to be rude. It made me chuckle is all.

I think maybe a better question would have been, perhaps, "Are there some ways to learn more advanced techniques?"

Maybe that wouldn't have surprised me so much.

"There's this one and one that Mae made and posted.."

that's fine and everything, I mean I could do that, it's just that if I sped it up I know I'd wind up smacking myself in the head with a stick

Thanks everyone, what is good lenght for lightsaber? My "lightsaber" is 48" long (8" hilt / 40" blade). I think its too long.

Your lightsaber(not including the hilt) should be a meter long.

And the hilt roughly a third of a meter long.

Right... Unless of course, you are 7 feet tall. In which case a meter long saber will be too short.

A meter is a generally accepted length, but if you're too short, you may need to shorten it a bit.

As a silly example, I cite Yoda. His saber certainly isn't a meter long. :D

Practice in your back yard with a stick

I still think you should teach me how to do that 'flip' that gets you from laying on your back to crouched on your feet.

Then all I gotta do is stand up, catch my lightsaber, and carry on.

That requires not only practice but a very light body and a bunch of strength. Or, if you have a heavy body, bunches and bunches of strength.

Be careful not to dislocate your back the first time you attempt it.
