I was watching TPM again the other day and a thought struck me. Jabba must be young here, right? In the Clone Wars, Jabba's uncle Ziro is probably older then him, but does not look it. And does that make him middle-aged in ROTJ? And at what age exactly is a Hutt considered to be an adult? How old in human years would a teenage Hutt be?
Jabba's about 600 years old as of the OT, so calling him "young" in TPM is pretty relative. Proportionally, he's in the same age area. Ultimate Alien Anthology puts Hutt middle age as starting around 650. Aruk, who's approaching 1,000, is called "very old" in The Hutt Gambit, to give an idea of upper limits.
The Essential Guide to Alien Species establishes that 1,000 is the maximum recorded age for Hutts. They also undergo growth spurts, which Jabba did between ANH and ROTJ, where they'll gain significantly in fatness. Han theorizes that Hutt size is linked to their disposition; size being related to prestige, fat Hutts are haughtier and meaner while slimmer ones are more personable. Which is sort of interesting.
Strange that it takes so long for them to develop mentally. Rotta looked as if he was born yesterday. They're utterly helpless for decades? It really is a wonder the Hutts exist let alone run a galactic cosa nostra.
Actually none of the SW creatures and species are overly...disgusting. (Okay, except the Vong and the Geonosins) Jabba is ugly as all get out but there is almost something cute about him. I think it's that dazed look mixed with his overly disgusting appearance and habits. It's so gross that it becomes comical. Plus there is the endearing and diabolical "Ho ho ho ho." Let me put it this way, Tony Soprano scares me a lot more. As does Xixor.
Locomotion halfway between seals and snails. Reproduction marked by hermaphroditism combined with marsupial-style gestation carried out over decades. Frog mouths and worm tails and primate hands, all in one package.
