The title pretty much states my whole question. Why does everyone seem to speak or be able to speak Huttese? It seems like its more basic and common than Basic!!!

Also, I've seen people use "GFFA" a lot on these forums. What the hell does it mean?

Well, Huttese is only spoken on Tatooine in the films, IIRC, and the Hutts are in control of the planet. So it makes sense that Huttese is spoken frequently there.

GFFA = Galaxy Far, Far Away.

I'd say because Hutts have a heck of a lot of power that Huttese is common. But basic is much more common.

GFFA= Galaxy Faf, Far Away and its used to refer to the Galaxy our heroes live in. :)

EDIT: Dangit, Bib beat me to it!

Huttese seems to be the GFFA equivalent of Spanish in the United States: it is by no means an official language, but many people know it or know some words of it. Even Palpatine understands Huttese (see ATOC) as George W. Bush understands, and speaks, some very limited Spanish. This is understandable given that both come from areas bordering regions where the other language is primary, although Palpatine seems to be quite a bit more fluent in his understanding of Huttese than Bush is of Spanish. Perhaps in the GFFA, like in the United States with respect to Spanish, many government forms and announcements are translated into Huttese for all those immigrants from underdeveloped Outer Rim worlds to understand. I can just imagine a "Basic Only" movement in the GFFA, perhaps with its own EU novel on the "Language Separatist Movement" in the galaxy.

Basic is far more common than Huttese. I can only think of a few scenes where Huttese is spoken and all of those are on Tatooine. It just happens that a large majority of the movies takes place on Tatooine, so you here the language a lot.

There are several scenes in ATOC where Huttese is spoken on Coruscant.

-Palpatine's Rodian receptionist speaks to him in Huttese.
-During the chase scene, a dug says "Jedi Poodoo" to the pursuing Jedi.
-Zam Wessel, as she shifts back to her natural form while dying, says the Huttesse equivalent of "bounty hunter 'fodder'" with respect to Jango Fett.

In addition, on Kamino, Jango tells Boba to shut the door to the closet in Huttese.

I don't think it's more common throughout the entire Galaxy, it's just more common amongst the types of people we're introduced to on screen.

Hutts are gangsters so if you're involved in crime or any kind of underhanded dealings (politics included ;) ) it'd probably pay to be able to get by in the language of the guy paying your contract.

That includes our dear Chancellor Palpatine.

"I won't sit here and let you bad mouth our good friend Palpatine."

I meant that purely as a compliment. What other qualities would the voting public want in a supreme chancellor or emperor if not being underhanded? Three cheers for Palpatine!
