    I read once in a book where Han is going like .7 Hyperspace (7 times the speed of light) and makes it like 70 light years in a day... ummm... logic? they would take 10 years...

    Isn't Hyperspace ment to differ to real space though?

    7 times the speed of light read in real space terms could be 10 times slower than in hyperspace.

    Entering hyperspace is like entering an alternate dimension, and drilling through the real universe taking a short cut. There are even such things as "Hyperspace Gates" that connect two gates together, and can transfer matter, even beings between the gates, through hyperspace.

    I'm not sure, probably depends on how far the gates are from each other. Since it relies on the same hyperspace that ships travel on, it equivalent to how long it takes ships to get through hyperspace based on their hyperdrive, though I couldn't tell you what the gate's hyperdrive rating would be (which would designate actual speed in hyperspace)...

    You mean the Wookie infiltration scene in Tyrant's Test. The Falcon burst out of hyperspace, using its exit speed to its advantage to assume proximity with the Superstar.

    Where have hyperspace gates been mentioned? I've never heard of that.

    Hyperspace gates come from the article about the Gree Enclave from the Adventure Journals. They have also had other obscure refrences in other WEG products.

    Hyperspace is the universe viewed from the perspective of a tachyon, the relative velocity of everything to you is superluminal--the whole universe is moving at your at many times c (an analogy is that when you're going 75 mph on the Interstate, the Interstate and everything else is moving 75 miles per hour toward you, relative to your point-of-view). In reality, as allowed by Special Relativity, a ship in hyperspace has been converted into tachyons (matter moving faster than light to all outside reference points) as opposed to tardyons (matter moving slower than light to all outside reference points).

    The Attack of the Clones Incredible Cross-Sections published by DK Books and penned by Dr. Curtis Saxton, Ph.D., explicitly leads to this conclusion.

    Hyperspace
    Hyperdrives allow voyages through an eerie realm called hyperspace--i.e. the ordinary universe viewed from a ship travelling faster than the speed of light. Hyperdrives adjust faster-than-light "hypermatter" particles to allow a jump to light-speed without changing the complex mass and energy of the ship.

    --Attack of the Clones Incredible Cross-Sections, pg. 3.

    Real Space is the universe as you and I experience it; every particle in our bodies and in everything that isn't light that we see is moving slower than light. All matter is composed of tardyons.

    Other Space seems to be a catch-all term for exotic spatial phenomenon and regions.

    As for the claim of 70 light-years per day seems rather ridiculous: calculated figures for hyperspace jumps in the Prequel Trilogy have reached several tens of millions c, I believe.

    Note: For those unaware, the constant (c) represents the speed of light, which is constant in all reference frames and equivalent to approximately 300,000 kilometers per second. Thus, a figure such as "1 million c" is approximately equal to 300 billion kilometers per second.

    Besides the Hyperspace Gates here is another interesting hyperspace technology;

    "Static Hyperspace Bubble Generator
    a device, developed by the Bakurans, the SHBG surrounded a ship in realspace with a hyperspace bubble. This bubble doesn't provide any thrust, so the ship cannot move at hyper-speeds.

    The Movies;

    Travel between star systems would be impossible were it not for the development of the revolutionary hyperdrive propulsion system. The term hyperdrive refers to the engine and interrelated systems that propel a starship through the alternate dimension of hyperspace. In hyperspace, there is no limit to how fast a starship can travel, and thus interstellar distances can be traversed in mere minutes.
    Before entering hyperspace, a pilot must supply exact coordinates derived by the ship's navicomputer. Without precise calculations, a ship may collide with a body in hyperspace with catastrophic results.

    Although largely reliable, constant modifications to a hyperdrive can render it untrustworthy. Han Solo's Millennium Falcon had an extremely recalcitrant hyperdrive which often failed when needed the most."

    Expanded Universe;

    The invention of the hyperdrive millennia ago is perhaps the single-most important development in galactic history, as it allowed for the Republic's growth and expansion. Early hyperdrives were limited in range and reliability. Thousands of years ago, ships would use hyperspace beacons and jump points to travel from system to system on specific routes.
    Modern hyperdrives are classified by their speeds, with the lower the class number, the faster the drive. The Millennium Falcon has an extremely fast hyperdrive, rated at class 0.5.

    Numerous safety systems restrict the use of a hyperdrive while near the presence of a large gravitational field. As a result, a ship cannot enter hyperspace safely until it has traveled a certain distance from a planet's gravity well. Military engineers have exploited this characteristic in developing weapons such as artificial gravity well generators. These devices fool hyperdrives into thinking a gravity well is present, and disable a target ship's ability to escape into hyperspace.

    hyperspace;
    A dimension of space-time that can be reached only by traveling at light speed and using a hyperdrive engine. Hyperpsace converges with realspace, so that every point in realspace is associated with a unique point in hyperspace. If a ship travels a specific direction in realspace prior to jumping to hyperspace, then it continues to travel in that direction through hyperspace. Objects in realspace cast gravity shadows into hyperspace that have to be plotted to avoid collision

    realspace;
    Normal space, the dimension in which all residents of the galaxy live. Travel within realspace is slow compared to traveling through the shadow-dimension called hyperspace."
    -Guide to Star Wars 3rd edition.

    Hyperspace
    A dimension of space-time that can be reached only by traveling beyond light-speed velocity. Hyperspace converges with realspace, so that every point in realspace is associated with a unique point in hyperspace. If a ship travels in a specific direction in realspace prior to jumping to hyperspace, then it continues to travel in that direction through hyperspace. Objects in realspace cast "shadows" in hyperspace that must be plotted to avoid collisions. Galactic travel took a quantum leap forward with the discovery that, with the use of a hyperdrive, a starship can exceed the speed of light and enter a dimension that takes advantage of the wrinkles in the fabric of realspace.

    "Realspace;
    Normal space, it is in the dimension in which galactic residents live. Travel within realspace is slow compared to traveling through the shadow-dimension called hyperspace. It has distance and volume"
    -Official Star Wars encyclopedia.

    "A vital component on many starships, the hyperdrive is responsible for accelerating a vehicle for faster-than-lightspeed vel

    well maybe if it says .7 past lightspeed then it means like 10 to the 7th power or something. So 10000000 times the speed of light. That sounds reasonable to me. So .x past lightspeed would be 10 to the xth power times the speed of light.

    .7 Hyperspace (7 times the speed of light)

    Actually, 0.7 doesn't mean seven times the speed of light. There's no real indications anywhere that show what the "point X past lightspeed" scale measures, but the speeds reached by the Falcon and other ships in the GFFA far exceed the types of speeds you're talking about.

    In this thread there's a sort-of-round-about discussion of the hyperdrive rating scale as it's depicted in the EU, if you're interested.

    oh yeah I guess I could be wrong, because the lower the .x is, the faster the speed.

    Maybe, when it says .1 past lightspeed, it means how much lower it is than a given speed past lightspeed. So however whatever the .x is past lightspeed, its related to how much less it is than the set default speed past lightspeed. This is very vague sounding but if anyone can make anything out of it let me know. I'll explain better tomorrow because I have to go to school now.

    Just a theory of mine, which, of course, can't be proven until some author specifically addresses this issue: The standard scale for hyperspace measure (not Zhan's linear scale) where faster is represented by a lower figure could refer to the amount of force acting against the body as it moves through hyperspace. The strength which the hyperdrive pushes the ship affects the number, as a more powerful drive would be able to push through whatever drag exists in hyperspace, making the vessels travel faster. A higher number represents a weaker drive proportional to the ship it is moving, while a higher number represents a drive which can counteract the drag forces of hyperspace better relative to the ship it is moving, propelling the vessel through a greater realspace distance over a lesser period of time.

    You might want to edit that last sentence right now it's a little confusing in the way it reads:

    A higher number represents a weaker drive proportional to the ship it is moving, while a higher number represents a drive which can counteract the drag forces of hyperspace better relative to the ship it is moving, propelling the vessel through a greater realspace distance over a lesser period of time.

    Shouldn't that second higher read lower instead considering your talking about the difference in speed achieved between higher numbered, slower hyperdrives and lower numbered, faster hyperdrives.
