The scene where he has his hand in the box in the original Dune movie is so unintentionally funny that it is in fact the highlight of the movie.

    ^Why? It's a nice book.

Though I do think it's going a bit to your head. Actually, you might want to set it down and wait a bit before reading it again. Got to let those feelings of grandeur reside.

Only saw the Sci-Fi channel miniseries. From what I've heard, I'm not missing much by not seeing the original.

the hell you're not! you're missing the whole deal man! reading the book is all fine and dandy, but reading it and not seeing the movie is like watching the fireworks blindfolded. this is the one instance where i can say that i liked the movie better than the book.

Dune never really grabbed on to me.

Which is good, because I would have felt violated.

when i was fifteen i must've watched that movie over 100 times. after reading the book this summer, i was rather dissapointed at the ending and lack of sound-weaponry.

You're not. I saw the orginal on TV once. In addition to laughing at the bad VFX and getting angry that Patrick Stewart was wasted as Gurney, I was really creeped out by the fact that the Baron was dirty old man with a penchant for little boys.

I read Dune in the 8th grade. I liked it at the time, but I don't remember much about it.

Dude. Put the Dune down now. No, seriously. The first 80 or so pages are awesome. It's a trap waiting to get sprung...then the rest of the story takes place in the desert. And then the rest of the series gets so crazy you need a GPS, MapQuest and alot of Booze to find out where the story is going.

My head is about to explode. Neither of the movies come close to approaching the quality of the orginal novel, if only because the novel format allows for more nuanced detail and commentary. The novel has everything the movie has, with many additional, enriching layers of complexity.

The only standpoint I oculd imagine arguing the superiority of the movies is in terms of billing it as some sort of sci-fi action flick/space soap opera (like SW) which it was never really supposed to be.

Although, all that said, I personally preferred Children and God Emperor. Just so you (J_R_J) know, I think there was also a legitimate discussion about the Dune series somewhere in the JCC--could've been Ampitheater, though. You should stop by, and get some real discussion.

The 80s Dune movie is always good for a laugh. And sadly, the mini-series was much worse, thanks to the stupid costumes and actors who can't speak English.

Wasn't that basically how his character was supposed to be?
