I decided MLA is the dumb format, I now think Chicago is much neater.

Many months ago I thought "Oh, what, I have to learn the new format for a research paper? Eh!?!? I like MLA!"

Now I see the truth, that, when given a research paper assignment that has to be a certain number of pages, that, Chicago manual of style way of citations, TAKES UP A BUNCH OF SPACE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE, thus allowing one to in reality not write as much as you would have to otherwise, depending of course upon the number of citations that you use.

    It is neat.

In this thread express shock at the revelation of how Chicago is better than MLA or discuss how you knew this already and discuss abotu Chicago manual of style, or, if you insist, disagree and say MLA is better.

    Here's a sith:

Don't talk about that there is no Star Wars talk in this forum. If you talk about that you have to say about how it relates to MLA or Chicago.

I have created an image to demonstrate the facts:

that darth has a square face because he once got it stuck in a square face making book found at his university library which used the Chicago format. he was not a sith back in these formative years but you can imagine what an effect this had on him as he was very naive with the ways of the world and square face making books. he has never gotten over this and this is why he prefers MLA.

Yes, taking up more space is very useful, when you are writing in a time crunch!

I hope your English teacher and others who read your papers have senses of humor and are not like "what!" all the time.

MLA stands for "Men with Large Asses." I don't really know why.

I'm glad I get to use MLA then. I tend to have problems meeting maximum page limits. [face_shhh]

Yeah, call me a nerd, but I do understand where you're coming from. [face_laugh]

Regarding Sith lords and the Chicago style of citations:

Darth Square Face, formerly known as Flavius Q. Happenin' (1), was deeply scarred by his traumatic childhood and the taunts of other children who were unable to look beyond his radioactively-hued skin and the fact that his body was so lopsided he couldn't play dodgeball in P.E. without toppling over all the time (2). Square Face's fate as a Sith lord was sealed when he was horribly disfigured by an accident with a Guttenberg press and never managed to come to terms with the fact that he would never again get laid. 3. Same, did you think I was actually going to read more than one book for this stupid term paper?

Hmm, I'm not sure what format I usually use when writing, but it really doesn't matter once you're writing for yourself. At that point you just need to stick to one format and go with it. For instance, there are different ways to cite sources, but as long as all sources are cited the same way for similar things, it's fine however it's done. You just don't want there to be inconsistencies.

I own The Chicago Manual of Style, though, because most book publishers seem to follow the Chicago style while MLA format is used in many colleges. Most of the time I don't think it makes much of a difference, not to your actual writing, anyhow. I follow the rules of The Elements of Style most closely, the famous short but powerful book! All writers should have that book.

APA is ridiculous. I know a girl who's advisor had been sued b/c a student of his had done a thesis and hadn't cited some research that neither student nor advisor had ever heard of, who did something similar to what the student had done for her thesis. ??????????
