I am a reasonable man. I consider myself very open to culture and diversity, in reality and in Star Wars (I even believe Gungans are a helpful and productive part of the universe)...but I have to say, I've had it with Bothans. With a few exceptions, Bothans are paranoid, whiney, and cold hearted. The few exceptions(Asyr, Traest) are only that way because they worked with non-Bothans for much of their lives. Does anyone else feel this way? I mean is there any redeeming value to a Bothan anymore?
Does anyone else feel this way? I mean is there any redeeming value to a Bothan anymore? Many Bothans died bring the plans for DSII?
Borsk redeemed himself fairly well in SBS. I never thought it would be possible, but Denning pulled it off.
Well, come on. The way he dealt with Nom Anor was terrific, and he had one of the best death scenes ever for a Star Wars character.
As I recall, the "many Bothans died to get the plans" was debunked in another book. They were just incompetent, or something like that. Does anyone else remember? However, I do think the Bothans are a parody of certain folks right here on earth....
It wasn't debunked; it was expanded upon. In Shadows of the Empire, half of the Bothan Y-wing squadron gets vaped when fighting the Suprosa, then more die when the bounty hunters attack them as they're decrypting the computer.
Bearing in mind I've only had a limited exposure to Bothans (we've only met a handful), I can't say I particularly like them. If Bel Iblis' and Han Solo's cultural analyses in the original Zahn trilogy are right, then I dislike them a lot.
I think it's pretty impressive that the authors have done such a great job with Bothans to the point that you hate them so much. Bothans rule. Amazing.
If Bel Iblis' and Han Solo's cultural analyses in the original Zahn trilogy are right, then I dislike them a lot. Yeah, because we all can accept the unbiased Corillian perspective on cultural diversity. Frankly, I think Bothans are great. They're the only members of the Republic who arn't afraid to get their hands dirty from time to time. Sometimes things arn't black and white, just a thousand shades of grey.
Oh, I couldn't help myself. Bothans "Over the centuries the aliens became masters at gathering intelligence and exploiting it for political gain. This ruthless pursuit of power and influence, known as the 'Bothan Way', causes many non-Bothans to view the species as untrustworthy opportunists waiting to pounce on the slightest misstep." - Essential Guide to Planets and Moons
Borsk Fey'lya is the best Bothan we've seen so far. A true politician. Denning was the only one who respected this character, it seems.
Treast Kre'fey is the coolest Bothan we've met in the GFFA. Because of his grandfather's error, he was able to see the problems with the Bothan Way, as described in Onslaught.
I like Bothans. They?re underhanded, treacherous, backstabbing, disloyal, deceitful little furballs. What?s not to like? ?
I like Bothans I'm curious, why does everybody so down on Borsk, I mean, if you look at the whole NJO arc (sans Dark Tide, I don't like Stackpoles portrayl of Borsk) you can see how he was manipulating things to one day turn the tide in the war. In EoV you could see him playing the "game" politics, and in SoS he pretty much risked his poltical neck w/ the holo of teh military commanders in the senate, I was more affected by his death than Anakins, truth be told. Oh, and in pre-NJO books, Borsk was aiming for the top, something he eventually did acheive, so, having acheived *his* goal, he could work for the *galaxies* goal. But this is all one mans opinion.
Why does everyone hate Borsk Fey'lya... For me, it started back in Heir To The Empire, and he just cemented that feeling during Dark Force Rising when he talks about how he used everyone and doesn't care if Luke and Han die. And he said it right to Leia! What a jerk! Now, I know I can't judge the entire Bothan race on the actions of one person. There are Bothans who aren't like Fey'lya. Asyr, for example, is actually pretty cool, although she never struck me as right for Gavin. I always got the impression she fought for what she believed in, and that made her a great character, IMO. ~Inyri
