OK, I go across the street to my local 7-11 for a late night beer while I am waiting for my laundry to finish. (I live alone and someone has to do it.)

There is this guy there outside the store with a gas can and he asks if I have any spare change or something because his car is out of gas. He has his young son with him whom I estimate to be about 10yrs old.

I always dump my spare change in the ashtray of my truck. While I do sometimes smoke, I don't do it in my truck. 1 pk for me lasts a week. I gave this guy about 4$ in change. More than enough to get to where he was going about 15 miles away.

I did not see the guy as being a bum, just a guy down on his luck. And with a kid.

    What would you have done?

Now I have to break a dollar at the coffee machine in the morning. (I had to throw that in because, well, being an SK and all. :p)

I guy said this to me a while ago. He came to me and asked if I had any change at all, he said he wasn't one of those bum junky types. Just that him and his buddy were out of gas and they needed to get going. I didn't have change so I told him and he was just alloh c'mon anything will do. What strikes me is, wouldn't either one of them have any money on them ?

as for your situation, I guess I would if his son is with him and he looks serious.

You should use that on your campaign.

When people come up asking for money for gas my dad usually just takes their can and puts some gas in it. It's very ammusing to see the look on their faces when he does this.

    Back in the day when I would get approached by a TRUE bum asking for money I would ask for a story. I would say;

"Tell me something that happened in your life, you look like an older guy, were you in NAM?"

I got some horrid NAM stories. A couple of guys started crying while telling their stories. The most I handed out was $5. That guy told me of a family in NAM he was trying to save that got blown to bits in front of him. True or not, good story! ;)

I am a sap. If I have cash on hand, I am more then likely to give it away if asked. Otherwise I feel guilty.

I had something similar happen to me once. I had just sold a few old CDs back to Hastings(got a lousy 5 bucks for 'em, but still :p), and as I'm walking out, this guy walks up to me and tells me this sob story about how he lost his job and is homeless, blah blah blah, and asks for whatever I can spare. I was kinda afraid that he'd like... stab me if I didn't give him something, so I kinda reluctantly gave him my five bucks. I don't know if he was really homeless or not, but I'll believe he was just ... because.

    :p

Tell him you sponser a child in Africa and are therefore doing your share, and to go bother someone else.

I seem to be a permanent blip on the radar of people who ask for money from complete strangers.

Don't these people know I'm an evil bitch?

*Hands hard-earned money to complete stranger with sob story*

I always ask taxi drivers what the most ****** up thing they've seen in the back of their taxi's. Some tell horrid sex stories, some have crackers about tourists they've ripped off or drunken idiots tossing their cookie's in the back. Lots of them also have pretty tragic stories about being doctors or engineers before they emigrated but end up being unqualified and struggling to find work on arrival. I prompted one guy in Melbourne to talk about his family and it turned out his dauther was a burgeoning pop star with a demo cd....which he instantly played at ear-splitting volume all the way back to my hotel. Turns out she couldn't get a break in the business because "the Jews run it all and try to keep us down". Bloody fascinating! Try it some time, taxi drivers see a lot more of humanity than most people, I think.
