I was at the movies today with my son. I saw a movie that inspired me, awoke my inner child, and had me just beaming with glee throughout... because it had a world... a wonderful, glorious world... a world of endless possibilies for adventure, joy, bliss, and stellar fun.

    The movie?

    TREASURE PLANET!

If you, as I, love fairy-tale spaceflight on steam-and-crystal powered star-frigates, surfing the solar flares... go see it. Maybe it's just me, but I've always been SO into this steam-punk motif, a sorta 1800-style thing with crystal-and-steam powered spaceflight. It's just so GLORIOUS. Heck, I even had a band that was about precicely that called Beat Symphony (see our Christmas Greeting, as a side note!)

Anyone else enjoy Treasure Planet but me?

I haven't seen it yet, but I remember thinking it was a really cool concept. I remember those modernized Shakespeare movies a few years back, but they never did it for me. If you're going to modernize something, modernize the words so you can understand it better. Are you going to try to make a Treasure Planet spin-off, or something else?

I'm not a big fan of Disney movies but that did look really cool. I liked the idea of those solar sail things with a jet on back. That was a cool scene.

Well honestly I must say the task of making a fanfilm in this scenario is scaring even me. I'm already having second thought... :)

But I do love the concept. I seroiusly, truly and honestly love the steam-solar-sail-fullrigger-space-travel, that "fable spacetravel" thing where planets are spitting-distances apart, space is breathable and hovering and anti-gravity is the norm, crystals and steam is the power... but nobody ever heard of computers, electricity, or the wheel. :)

Some might feel I am "plugging" but how can I plug a dead bamd... that was not my intent at all... but I still gotta show you a couple of the pictures we took during our "heyday", it was taken in a steam-museum in my hometown:

    [image=http://www.lysator.liu.se/~zap/beatsymphony/pics/cobblestone.jpg]

I dunno, it's something massively appealing to imagine oneself straitening the cravat, donning the cylinder hat, and saying "I'd say old chap, off we go", turn to the helmsman and say "take her out, second star to the right, steady as she goes!"

    Aaaah... *bliss* :)

he kinda reminds me of pippin in the thumbnails.

i dunno, but i think ill avoid treasure planet. from what ive seen of it its just... well the mixing of CGI and cartoon animation seems way to obvious for starters... but who knows.

It's neither wierd al nor a hobbit. And the blond one is me ;)

Apprentize: You totally miss the point! I don't care if it would have been full CGI, full drawn, claymation, string puppets, live action, etc.... thats completely beside the point. The point is the CONCEPT of solar-sail-ships and 1800-styled "technology" used for spacefaring, complete with pirate flag and broadside with the big bulky iron cannons (although they shoot plasma bolts!)

    It's just so friggi'n COOL and I just bleedi'n LOVE it. That's all :)

Actually from the very first trailer the whole concept seemed pretty ludicrous to me. It bugs me when Disney takes a classic story and makes it gimmicky. If it had been turned into a straight-up sci-fi it wouldn't have been a big deal, but the idea of spaceships shaped like seaships is ridiculous beyond my suspension of disbelief.

C'mon where's your sense of romance? Lets set sail and sail to the stars! Lets surf the rays of the van allen belt and take our little ourboard to the moon!

It's magic. It's a world I simply love. I have always loved it. Will always love it. Steam. Tall ships. Cravats. Sail into the sunset above the clouds. Mmmmmmmmm. *sigh*

    Orgasmic.

Then .... JUST DO IT. :D

For an example of how CGI might also be worked into this, check ut "The Mummy Returns." DVD. If you recall, there are those scenes where they are traveling in that Hot Air ballon Tallship type of contraption, much of which was done with CGI.

    Just an idea.

I still think it's a cool idea as long as you're not thinking of turning this into a "Star Wars" fan film. Heck, you don't even need for it to be a fan film. Just steal the concept. There's alot of nautically themed books out there that could be spaced out. Robinson Crusoe, Black Beard, White Squall, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (20,000 Lightyears in Space :) ), Peter Pan (love to see this one :D), etc.

I don't do Star Wars fan films for reasons I'd rather not say here ( I do like watching them though, and I respect the work that goes into some of them.), but if this ends up being a different type of project, I'd be happy to help with concept art, as art is my thing.

I have a few ship designs from a film project I've been preparing for that might interest you. They ended up in my trash pile when my first crew kind of ditched my idea (they thought my goals were too high). I also have half finished CG stunt doubles and FX tests out the wazoo laying around, but I think you'd like the ships. I'll see about scanning them in.

C'mon where's your sense of romance?

Are you coming on to me?

EDIT: I appreciate the decent response, BTW. A lot of people would have torched me (or tried to at least) for stating my contrary opinion, so I appreciate your being logical. :)

Actually, Mr. Scott, I think Zap was deriving the word "romance" as in the style of art. Like the Romantic style used in the 19th century (or so).

Zap, even though I haven't seen Treasure Planet yet, it does look amaizingly awesome. Disney, despite some first glance pessamism, always manages to have thier "magic" in everything they do. Well, mostly everything.

Yeah, I wasn't happy about the space/sea ships. I was just in it for those hover/solar whatever sails.

Well, Count Dooku's Sail Ship in AOTC was a bit reminiscent of what MasterZap is talking about. It seemed like somewhat of a "classic" design and mode of transportation, considering all of the other technology we saw in the film.

I don't necessarily think that such vehicles would be "out of place" in a Star Wars FanFilm, per se. However, I do think that the time-period setting would probably have to be long long before TPM ... perhaps even pre-dating The Sith Wars timeline.

It can be done ... it will simply require some additional creative thinking. :)
