After the scene where Marty (Micheal J. Fox) McFly discovers the fate of his father and visits him at his grave site, Doctor Brown tells him he knew what happened to him, so he takes him back to his house. During the scene when the figure out that Biff went back in time and gave himself the Almanac they talk about what needs to be done. Marty suggests they go back to 2015 and prevent old Biff from getting the Almanac, the Doc tells him they cannot do that because it would be the future of 1985 "this point of time". Then the Doc talks about what happened with Biff and Marty mother, and then he refers to something that happened to him (Doctor Brown). He holds up the paper that reads "Crazy Doctor Was Commited". I need help knowing what actually happened to him and what he meant. I know there has got to be a few Back to the Future fans out there. Could someone please shed some light on this?

Nah, I think Biff made sure no one caught on to the reality of time travel by making everyone believe that Doc Brown was crazy, and having him committed. . . . as in, to a mental hospital.

Since Doc and Marty were the only ones to know of Biff with the Sports Almanac, Biff had Doc Brown committed to a mental hospital, and sent Marty to a boarding school in Switzerland. But, if these events happened, this would have rendered the events of the first film impossible,

But, since Doc and Marty go back to 1955 and witness the events of the first film, they did happen. Wonder what happened to the DeLorean in the Biff Version of 1985? Did he have it destroyed?

The DeLorean was probably destroyed in the alternate 1985, for the same reason that Doc Brown was committed to a mental hospital in the alternate 1985 (because Biff didn't want anyone else to be able to time travel).

But it's incorrect to say if these events happened, the first film couldn't have happened, because as Doc explains, there are parallel universes created each time something happens to alter the events of the past. So the first film still happened, it just skewed the timeline at a different point.

There probably was no DeLorean in the alternate 1985. Marty never went back to 1955 in the alternate timeline, so the "original" Marty was the only one to have been there... twice.

The thing that bothers me about these events is that we see old Biff return in the DeLorean (and breaking his cane) in the future, having performed his deed of giving his old self the Sports Almanac in 1955. If that act truly had set up an alternate timeline, wouldn't his arrival back to the future been to an alternate future to the one that Doc & Marty were visiting? That is, he should have arrived to the future of the timeline where Biff had used the Almanac to become rich.
This is a minor beef, and does not terribly diminish my enjoyment of the film.

That's a very good point, he should be in the Rich Biff future. Perhaps he hadn't been caught up in the alternate timeline as the events of the past hadn't been dramatically changed by the time he went back to 2015 or something...

He went insane trying to find a rational explanation for how the original Terminator timeline loop originated. He was commited shortly afterwards.

time travel movies and logic are bitter enemies to the end, an endless loop.

The greater mystery is why a crazy genius and a teenager would hang out together. What in the name of Einstein did they have in common, I mean McFly didn't look like a science geek or anything, and Doc didn't seem like the sort of cool old guy that teenagers would want to be seen with.

That is more weird than parallel timelines and kissing one's mother.

I believe if you watch the extra stuff you will find the scene where old biff disappears shortly after he returns the car to the future.

He is able to return to the same future, because young biff hasn't done anything to change it yet.
He throws the book to the side thinking the old man is crazy.

Once young biff changes things by reading the book, the old biff doesn't exist in the timeline that Marty and Doc are in, so he disappears.

It was established in the first film that it takes time for time to change.

Exactly, otherwise Marty would have dissapeared the second he got hit by the car instead of his dad.

As for why Doc was committed, I don't think that Biff knew that Doc was the one who invented the Time Machine. Old Biff only told Young Biff to watch out for a kid or an old man. He never specifcally said Marty or Doc. I think Doc was commited simply because of the atomosphere the Biff created in Hill Valley. Science was deemed unimportant and Doc was comitted for some unknown reason. Maybe he got caught with the plutonium or something. I don't think that Biff had anything to do with it directly.

that was explained in an earlier draft of the script. Doc had seen Marty and his friends hanging around Marty's garage. Doc offered them free beer if they cleaned up his garage. the producers ditched this idea because they felt it was out of character for Doc to be giving underage kids alcohol.

Actually, he did. A deleated scene in the BTTF II DVD shows Old Biff fading away (similar to Marty at the dance in 1955) beacuse the future in which he got back too, Old Biff had been dead and gone.

I loved these flicks but there were so many plotholes.

    Here is another;

In part 3 when marty goes back to 1885, He knocks a hole in the gas tank. There should have been the delorean in the cave that doc hid at the same time. It had only been there 9 months. Was there still gas in it? Did the lightning vaporize it in part 2 when doc went back? There should have still been some there that they could siphon out to get to 88mph.

It has been a while since I have seen these movies. We need an official thread. :p

^Anyone who stores an automobile for a long period of time says that you drain the tank before putting it into storage. At the drive in in 1955, Doc says, "I put gas in the tank!" Besides, the gas wouldn't have helped anyway because Marty ripped a hole in the back.

He spoke of an abandoned subplot from the early drafts but you can still plausilize what happened.

Apparently I need to whip out the DVD's and check out the deleted scenes.

A disappearing Biff is acceptable I suppose, but the 1985 of that timeline seemed so drastically different that I would imagne the whole neighborhood to become altered as well. (or perhaps that also takes time to change, hmm?)
