So im going to be joining the Air Force in a few months or so, and i just took teh ASVAB a couple days ago and scored a 92 and my dad is all freaking out about it because he says im in like the top 10% of all people who take it... Its a multiple choice test.. I knew little about certain parts of it and yet i still do good? All the Mechanical stuff was kinda iffy to me and i just "used the force" and chose at random... If this is the basis for how smart military people are judged to be... meh. The ASVAB needs to be redone to see how smart you really are. That is all.

The military has been testing brain scanning equipment for years. They're going to start using human subjects soon. preferably people who've scored above a 90 on those test things.

Man, you'll probably be sent to Iraq and dead in a month.

Actually, Air Force...as long as you know how to fly the airplane and aren't unlucky/dumb, you've got decent odds. Especially since the insurgency doesn't really have much in their arsenal for taking down fighter jets, gunships, and bombers.

Actually, you'd be surprised to find out how many score below 60. Quite frightening, actually. [face_worried]

All the ASVAB does is measure your aptitude to see what sort of jobs you qualify for. I imagine you had a nice long list of jobs to choose from. ;)

You can always tell the guys that scored rather low...when they get only one sheet! [face_laugh]

    hah! 94 here! :D

Anyhow, dude, that's cool! It means you can do almost anything you want in the military. Or so my recruiter tells me.

I scored a 90, the mechanical stuff was also iffy for me but I am not joining the armed services for two reason: I want to live til I am 30(even though the family that I did have in the armed services are still kickin it and having a great time.) and two I really can't imagine myself being under a man's control who has an IQ lower than all the kids I went to high school with.

Sorry, but bone dry doesn't count. The glass must be half full or half empty.

That said, the USAF has plenty of non-combat type jobs. A friend of mine enlisted in the AF and he's in linguistics studying Russian and Lord only knows what else. Chances are he'll be posted to Omaha or possibly do some embassy work overseas. Hardly a cannon fodder type job - not to discredit those who do or have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, but not everyone in the US military is being sent over to Iraq.

When I took the ASVAB, I guessed on most, if not all, of the questions in the mechanical section. Yet, I got a 99.
But the Army National Guard sat me at a desk and made me a pencil pusher. Bleh. My recruiter was full of ****. I should've joined the Air Force Reserves.

I took the ASVAB like 8 years ago, but I remember getting in the 99th percentile for everything but the Mechanical section, and I think I was still in the high 60's for that. That test is a joke.

I got a lot of 99th percentile scores, too. Military recruiters called my home non-stop for the next four years (including my first two years of college).

I haven't taken the thing because I don't want to deal with recruiters calling me. They were annoying enough after I had just graduated HS.

It's not a test in the traditional sense, but rather an assessment of what the person taking the ASVAB is good at doing. Going by your score, you'd do well in most other areas of the service except for some of the more mechanically inclined stuff. It's a skills assessment which has proven itself most valuable to the military and will continue to do so in the future.

And as you saw, some people are under the impression that it's an entrance exam of some sort when in fact it's not, thus the explanation.

I understand what it is and what it's for. I just find it hard to believe that I, a person whose experience with tools is limited to maybe 30 hours of Habitat for Humanity in my whole life... and most of that was painting, scores in the 60th percentile on the mechanical section. It seems to be too easy to do well.

A lot of the mechanical type stuff they had on the ASVAB when I took it (10-11 years ago or thereabouts) was pretty common sense type stuff at the start of it and it gradually ramped up as you went further along in it. So it's entirely possible to get in the 60s on mechanical and not have much in the way of experience with tools and other type of mechanically oriented things.

60th percentile. That means I did better than 60% of people who took the test. And the kind of people who take the ASVAB are usually ones thinking about the army, who tend to be the kind of people who play with tools.
    Or so I thought.
