I've always wondered -- when Vader says this, is he sensing Obi-wan, or Luke?

It could be Obi-wan, but, presumably, Obi-wan would be trying to hide his presence.

He's never felt Luke's presence before, and is not even aware of his existence, but would Luke's presence resemble an echo of Padme's?

On reflection, I guess it probably is Obi-wan, but an interesting ponder, nonetheless . . .

It's definetly Obi Wan he feels. He's more attune to the Froce at this point than Luke. He starts to get soemthing from Luke when in the trench battle when Luke uses the Force to blow up the Death Star remember.

I've always taken it for Obi-Wan. Could be Luke. Could be the droids. But the obvious guess is Obi-Wan.

Yep agreed with all of the above, it's definitely Old Ben he's talking about and that line has even more meaning after watching ROTS :)

Vader was talking about the last time he had an encounter with Obi-Wan. After that scene he goes and tells Tarkin that Obi-Wan is on the Death Star.

    ^ That's just uncalled for!

If you're going to actually watch the movies, you have no place here!

Ah! That line! "in the presence of", makes Obi-Wan sound like a third party. Padme is the last person "in the presence" of both Obi-Wan and Anakin, and of course, feeling Padme through feeling luke...

^A good thought jedi-mudja. But at the same time if you recall afterwards, Vader says to Tarkin,

"Escape is not his plan, I must face him, alone." He sounds pretty sure that it's Obi-wan's presence he's feeling.

It would have to be Obi Wan because he does not know about Luke just yet...

he thinks that the child he had died at birth...

So it has to be Obi Wan

It was obi-wan he felt, please remeber that when George Lucas wrote the script in the 70's, I doubt he actually had Padme in mind. by now, most of us have learned that some things in the PT doen't have this all-important meaning in CT,thus, this case speaking of Padme.

    Obi Wan?!?!?!?

    It was definately Artoo!!

    If he had finished the sentence it would've been something like " . . A presence i haven't felt since . . . he helped me out on Grevous's ship!" [face_laugh] [face_laugh]

Actually, that is a potential explanation for Vader's moment of confusion. But the real answer is that it's just been SO long since he last felt Kenobi's particular Force "signature" -- not to mention it has surely matured further in the 20 years.

yeah it's obi wan he is talking about.

but perhaps he is confused, his son, his droid, the droid he built, and his former master are all on board not to mention his doughter is on the station as well. vader was just overwelmed with emotion.

no. defitnly just obi wan. his conversation with tarkin is the answer.

It's Obi Wan. This is confirmed when Vader reports to Tarkin that Obi Wan is alive and well and running around on the Death Star. Now ofcourse there might have been a chance that Vader could have sensed Luke, but I don't think Lucas had that intension. The idea that Vader was Luke's father wasn't introduced to us until TESB. If he had been trying to give us that impression, the scene would have been filmed in a different fashion to establish that idea clearly.

Anyway it's generally believed that Anakin and Vader being the same person was an afterthought to ANH and the primary inspiration for TESB and it's sequel ROTJ.
