    My reasons

1.I can understand the vocals spouted by Morbid Angel better than I can ANY Nirvana song.

2.Even when the lyrics are interpreted for me they seem like nothing more random words thrown together.

3.The guitar playing is less than mediocre.

4.This is just my opinion but I think every one of these bands has more talent and better lyrics than Nirvana:Iron Maiden,Judas Priest,Opeth,Nevermore,Soundgarden,Alice in Chains,Dream Theatre,Pantera...I would be on,but you don't have all day.

Also I think it's quite sad we worship someone who was on herion and then killed himself. He's no hero of my mine.

I don't hate Nirvana,I like many of their songs but I really don't think they are deserving of such idolization.

I also agree that they are overrated. Some of their music is OK, at best IMHO. I think they get so much recognition because they were the most visible band to usher in the "alternative" era.

i think a lot of their pop stemmed from their place in the alt world as a forerunner, but i do really like them a lot...i've been meaning to get the new CD that courtney the @$%#^ didn't want released of unreleased songs...

I also think that they are definitely overrated. Sure, they ushered in the era of grunge, or alternative, if you will, and for that they are truly pioneers. But in the overall scheme of things they arent that unbelievable, IMO.

Honestly, does anyone think that this practical canonization of Kurt Cobain (and the band as a result) would have even come close to happening if he didnt kill himself or die tragically ? Of course not, and they'd be just another anonymous band if that didnt happen.

EDIT : The album coming out this week isnt an album of unreleased stuff. Its a greatest hits collection with the new single on it.

I agree. They are over rated...but not the most over rated.

To say we should condemn Kurt because he was a junkie is a little foolish. Every band you mentioned has at least one member who is or was a heroin user.

Nirvana was a band who was at the right place at the right time. Do I like them? No. But I can't deny their place in Rock and Roll history.

I am also a firm believer that Kurt did NOT kill himself. He was set up by Courtney.

oh...i thought there were more on there than one..thanks for the tip dvader

and i don't think they would have been as canonized either had kurt not committed suicide, but they would never have been another anonymous band imo

"To say we should condemn Kurt because he was a junkie is a little foolish."

Making a hero out out of him is even more foolish.

"Every band you mentioned has at least one member who is or was a heroin user."

I don't remember Priest,Maiden,Opeth or Nevermore having these problems......

So he took drugs, big deal. It's no reason to hate him. And the drug thing isn't why so many people were and are huge fans of Nirvana. You don't make a hero out of a person because they took heroin, thats just dump.

Sure they are very overrated... but I still love them. I don't see the point in hating a band because some people think they are god-like. But you said you didn't like them in the first place, so it wouldn't matter. :p

I'm sorry but drugs are bad and I stand by my opionion that Cobain is a poor role model.

Kurt's no ones hero, he checked out and when he did any hero status went with him IMO.

    And Nirvana does indeed suck.

Indeed they are over-rated, but I still enjoy their music. Their sound and lyrics are poppy and sometimes don't make too much sense, but I don't mind it at all. They're one of my favorite bands to listen to, even though I realize they're put up on a pedestal for some pretty stupid reasons. They probably would've broken up soon even if Cobain didn't kill himself.

A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido. A denial...

    Whatever you say... Mr. Mackie.

In my opinion, a person can be a hero wether they are addicted to drugs or not. What does that matter?? It's not like he was affecting anyone else by it.

I completely disagree. I don't know if you were actually into the music scene when Nirvana were at their height but I was, and the affect they had on music was incredible. They swept away all those crap heavy metal hair bands from the 80s and (briefly) made rock music matter again. Nevermind and In Utero are two of the greatest punk rock albums of all time, and I still get the same kick listening to the songs on those albums even ten years later.

Cobain's death had little or nothing to do with the band's current iconic status. They may have gained a few extra fans from all the morbid publicity, but the band were already iconic before then, at least to my generation. Why do you think they've been remembered much longer than other grunge bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc? I would argue that it's for the same reason The Beatles are remembered more fondly than other bands from the early sixties. It wasn't because of Lenon's death. It was because their music was the best and most influential from that era, plain and simple. Same with Nirvana.

    IMHO, of course :)

1.I can understand the vocals spouted by Morbid Angel better than I can ANY Nirvana song.

That's just you not making an effort to understand them.

2.Even when the lyrics are interpreted for me they seem like nothing more random words thrown together.

So you do not like the style the lyrics are written? No problem but just because you do not like it should other people stop liking it too?

3.The guitar playing is less than mediocre.

And here is my main beef with your argument.

The guitar playing doesn't matter at all when you decide wether or not a band is good or even greatest. The kind of music Nirvana played never called for difficult guitar playing.

"OMG! He doesn't play 20 notes/sec. He sucks!"

    ::rolleyes::

You named nothing but Metal bands. Did you know Nirvana isn't a metal band but Alt. Rock and is a different catagory?

You don't like Alt. Rock, fine, but that's no reason to get mad when people like Nirvana instead of Opeth. Not everybody likes to sit through 8 min + songs.

BTW, it's Dream Theater! Why is it so hard to remember that? (and Kirk Hammett has two t's at the end of his name.)

Also I think it's quite sad we worship someone who was on herion and then killed himself. He's no hero of my mine.

So how exactly does Kurt's suicide or Heroin use affect the music Nirvana made?

I don't hate Nirvana,I like many of their songs but I really don't think they are deserving of such idolization.

You have a different taste then other people. Would you rather have Judas Priest in that position? Where everybody claims to be a Judas Priest fan but 90 % only knows 3 songs from the group?

Nirvana are over-rated sure, but your argument is pretty weak.

Personally, I can't stand Nirvana. All of my friends love them. I want to know where Kurt Cobaine stands compared to guys like Layne Staley and Chris Cornell. They had one radio single that got played like crazy and the whole world loved this new trend of "grunge" (Good God, don't even start saying they started grunge... [face_plain]). They wrote a lot of songs, a few which are worthy of being listened to more than once.

Kurt Cobaine died. Big media publication (anyone remember Sublime and how they were publicized more when their singer died?).

    I can't stand the group.
I don't see any talent other than a few guys who know the basics of their instruments and had fun. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't see why they're idolized.

If the playing of the musicians isnt innovative I don't see why they are such good musicians.I enjoy taleneted musicians.I will never be ashamed of it.THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH A GUITAR SOLO!

Last time I checked Soundgarden and Alice In Chians were NOT metal bands.

"So how exactly does Kurt's suicide or Heroin use affect the music Nirvana made?"

How about ,it stopped them from making any more?
