I noticed this on the DVD, but I went and checked back both my Special Edition VHS and my original VHS and it's there, too. After Vader says to Tarkin (re the Princess) "I told you she would never consciously betray the Rebellion," he raises his left hand and makes a gesture before the camera cuts to Tarkin with "Terminate her." Vader says something with that gesture. Anybody know what it is?

I like to think that he says "you know what must be done" or something else along those lines.

Pretty much it was the same set of lines, slightly delayed and ablibed by David Prowse when he spoke the lines.

All these years and I'd never noticed this til i bought the DVDs. It was weird seeing this for the first time.

    It's an editing mistake.

During the actual filming, Prowse made those hand gestures as he was speaking the line, so they lined up then.

But afterward, they didn't line up James Earl Jones's voice-over correctly; they inserted the line in too soon during the scene. It's as simple as that.

It's really bizarre that this has never been changed, especially with all the re-tooling and tweaking Lucas's people have done to the films. It's so glaringly obvious a mistake that I don't get how they have not altered it.

If you read the novel, the complete line is there.

If I remember right it goes:
"I told you she would never betray the rebellion, unless she thought it would destroy us as well."

That scene makes much more sense when you know that.

DS615, seeing as the novels are based OFF the movies, I don't think you can really use that scene to prove anything.

Movies always have mistakes in them, no matter how much editing goes into them. It's a bit odd that something like this wasn't caught in the first place, but worse things have happened (to switch fandoms completely...watch LotR: FotR, in Boromir and Aragorns last scene together...and watch Boromir's arm. When the shot looks down at him, it's resting on Aragorns shoulder, but when it looks up at Aragorn the arm is not longer there. They had lunch between takes :p)

I noticed this as well, last time I watched it. I figured it was possible, that Vader was using the force, manipulating Tarkin's mind, to order the immediate execution of Princess Leia. But then on the other hand, Vader could easily "dispatch" Leia himself if he really wanted to......

I keep telling you guys, Vader opened his mouth...

...and forgot what he was going to say.

It just goes to show that it happens to everyone...even Lords of the Sith. [face_blush]

Maybe his voice synthesizer is based on the guy from AOTC and it was on the fritz. He just needed to turn his little chest dial.

Actually, the novels are based on the movie shooting scripts, so this line likely appeared in the original script, but was edited out for the movie. The novel was released back in 1976, before the movie was anywhere near its final edit - how could the novel be based on the final movie?
