If a person's eyelids were cut off...

...could they still sleep or does sleep require eyelids?

I've always been curious about this.

 

I don't think they could sleep, unless you had some way of blackening your eyes. However, you'd probably go blind because they wouldn't be kept moist.

I can't remember who did it, but it was a torture method for someone. They'd cut off your eye lids so you couldn't sleep.

It would be pretty awful.

 

You can sleep with your eyes open. From what I know it just takes either almost complete blackness, or a state of total physical and mental exaustion. Or a boring teacher.

 

I'm pretty sure Rocky took a nap after fighting Apollo Creed.

So my answer is - Yes, you can sleep without eyelids.

 

I know a nuumber of people that sleep with their eyes open. You don't need eyelids to sleep, it would just be very difficult I think.

 

People can sleep with their eyes open.

Perhaps they wake up with dry eyes, I dont know.

But it can be done.

 

I think it was Nightmare on Elm Street 3 where some of Freddy's victims cut their eyelids off so they wouldn't sleep.

Rocky cut his eye lid open to let the blood out. He didn't cut his eye lid off.

I've got a friend who sleeps with her eyes open. But not for 8 hours or whatever.

It still need to be reasonably dark for you to sleep with your eyes open.

Jacqueline Saburido (You know, she's the one in all the Don't Drive Drunk pictures) had one of her eyelids burned off, she had to put drops in her eyes and a special cap over the eye to sleep so that it wouldn't dry out or whatever, but the cap was clear, so yes.

 

Yes, but you turn your lights out to sleep.

my sister told me I sleep with my eyes open sometimes, though be honest you loose more sleep this way

Fish can sleep with their eyes open.

 

good point but fish can be startled out of sleep easier then a human can.

I know I've slept with my eyes open, because a flash of lightning startled me hench my earlier comment, you loose more sleep this way.

 

I think I've done it. I know there have been a few times where I have been tired, and have not closed my eyes, but seem to have lost time.

besides I fell asleep during a walk down the road, it was weird I found myself from one house to a house that is three quarters of a mile down the road in thirty seconds. I'm lucky I didn't fall into the ditch. It felt like I stepped through a time frame

 

I sleep with my eyes open all the time. I don't get dry eyes, i just blink while i'm asleep.

I'm told it's spooky as hell.

 

I would think that the persons eye's would dry out and you would eventually dry out.
