My girlfriend thought about Episode III after we've watched it in cinema. And she got an exceptional idea.

If Anakin had used a condom with Padme, Luke and Leia wouldn't have been born. Also he wouldn't have had dreams about Padmes death at the birth and so the emperor wouldn't have been able to influence Anakin so much. So Jedi Master Windu would have killed the emperor. Also Darth Vader and the whole empire wouldn't exist and a lot of people wouldn't have died.

So... Condoms save lives!

Padme could've used the pill. However, that wouldn't have protected either of them from STDs.

 

I don't understand why Anakin is so shocked when Padme tells him she is pregnant. I mean, if your going to do someone you love up the duffer without protection the consequence shouldn't be suprising.

 

Maybe they were using birth control and it failed, hence Anakin's surprise.

 

Maybe the condom broke.

Or Anakin thought he could use the Force to kill the sperm.

 

Easy answer: it was the will of the Force that she get knocked up.

Why would a married pair use a condom? That's more something a casual couple might employ. If Anakin and Padme were using anything, it was likely hormonal birth control - which isn't 100% effective. A woman can get pregnant in our world even if she's on various birth contraceptives. It does happen, especially if they're using a method that requires regular dosage, like the pill (this happens alot with women who use daily or weekly supplements, where they forget one application, and it throws the hormonal system off).

Keep in mind, despite the secret surrounding their marriage, I think it's fairly well insinuated that they eventually planned to have a family. For that reason, I think Padme would've avoided any of the more severe forms of birth control (sterilization is out) and possibly anything that could have side effects (in order to avoid having arousing other people's curiosity).

 

It also is quite possible that even if Padme wasn't pregnant, Anakin could have had dreams about Padme dying some other way. Which would still give us Vader, but not the twins that are required to defeat him and restore peace to the galaxy.

 

The first post is cute, maybe Anakin should have used the rhythm method. Bur if there is no Luke and Leia then there is no need for a Padme and Anakin; somehow someway he needed to knock her up. And they've been married for 3years and are obviously tryng to keep it a secret because of how Padme tries to hide it; if they didnt want their secret out then they should have been using condoms, birth control pills, the sponge altogether. Padme's reaction of "what are we going to do" after she tells Anakin kinda proves that they didnt have any idea of how they were going to keep this a secret in the long run.
